Q&A With Leslyn Tonge

(interview me)
Leslyn Tonge
Administrative Assistant, University of the Virgin islands

Location: St. Thomas, VI United States
Joined: Jun 28th, 2006
About   (request update)
Leslyn Tonge was born on the island of Dominica, formally known as the Commonwealth of Dominica.
In 1994, she graduated from the St. Andrew’s High School with seven passes from the CXC (Caribbean Examination Council) as well as top honors in English Language. Before migrating to the US Virgin Islands, she pursued courses in English Language, English Literature, European and West Indian History, and Sociology at the Dominica Sixth Form College.

In 2009, she began studies at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas in Communication. During her course of studies within that field, she took advantage of the opportunity to work with the school newspaper. She began as a reporter and quickly moved up the ranks to become Editor-In-Chief. Under her leadership, the newspaper became more visible on campus and within the community. Readership increased by approximately 5 percent and the paper became more self-sufficient through increased advertisement sales. Recognizing that the media outlook was changing and that there was a need for more exposure and recognition of the achievements of fellow classmates, she took the initiative to start a media club that produced a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, which focused on students. She was part of the founding and creation of the first official student led and operated radio station in the territory. Besides being a founding member, she served as Production Manager and host of the morning show.

Leslyn is a leader who is proactive, organized, and success-driven. She is interested in the people around her and works to provide leadership and guidance in every way possible. Based on these guiding principles she served as President of the Student Government Association and the UVI female imitative: Sisters With Purpose, transforming each organization into one that made students proud. In her capacity as a leader, she represented the student body at events locally and internationally.

She has served on a number of committees with the university and the community. She believes in volunteerism and gives of her time to the development and nurturing of young minds through organizations such as Youth Build. The plight of young women and victims of Domestic Violence is one of her main concerns and is the reason she volunteers with the Family Resource Center of the Virgin Islands.

On May 11, 2013, Leslyn graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Virgin Islands with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. She intends to pursue a Masters in Education with a concentration in Counseling and Guidance from the University of the Virgin Islands.
