Embracing the Beauty of Numbers
“We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics”. (Katherine G. Johnson) She is an American mathematician, portrayed in the 2016 movie “Hidden Figures”. I loved everything about this movie and the fact that she attended a HBCU. It made me understand even more why I loved numbers and why I need to be around people that look like me. I had to read more about her.

One of the primary reasons I chose to study mathematics is its versatility. Mathematics is not confined to a single discipline; it intersects with fields such as physics, engineering, economics, computer science, and even social sciences. It opens doors to a multitude of career paths and allows me to apply mathematical concepts to real-world challenges. I am particularly interested in how mathematical modeling can be used to address issues in areas like environmental science and public health as of recently because of my Economics class.

In conclusion, my decision to study mathematics in college at a HBCU is driven by my passion for the subject, its pertinence across various fields, and my desire to make a positive impact in my community. I am excited to continue my journey in mathematics, exploring new concepts, solving challenging problems, and ultimately using my knowledge to contribute to society.
