About   (request update)
I was born in a very small farm town in Virginia in 1940. I attended a segregated black elementary and high school and graduated from Hayden High School in May 1957. My parents were sharecroppers who made sure that all six children got a quality education. I am the fifth of six children. I attended and received my bachelor’s degree in business education from Norfolk State College in Norfolk, Virginia. My first full time position was at Virginia National Bank where I worked a short period of time before entering the civil service profession.I moved to San Bernardino in December 1969 after a challenging marriage and my first employment was with Operation Second Chance where Frances Grice was my supervisor. I worked there for two years and then began my career as a teacher at San Bernardino High School. I taught business subjects, English and math. My second position with the school district was a member of the hearing panel. It was during this time I had the opportunity to fulfill the requirements for my administrative credential which was obtained from California State University, San Bernardino. I became a vice principal at Curtis Middle School in 1980, Serrano Middle School in 1983, San Bernardino High School in 1985 and then promoted to principal of San Andreas High School in 1987 and the place I remained until July 2003 when I retired from the San Bernardino City Unified School District.I spent the next three years traveling, entertaining, volunteering, working part time, working on my book, taking classes, etc.; however, my mission had not been completed so I was pleased to be given an opportunity to work full time for the Superintendent of the San Bernardino County Schools. I currently hold the position of Assistant Superintendent in charge of Administrative Services. I have received many awards and recognition for the work I have done to make my community a better place to live.
