I chose to go to an HBCU because I had attended PWIs from elementary to high school. I wanted to learn in an environment where Black history and culture were not treated like an afterthought, or worse, completely ignored. Also, unlike my previous schools, I will not need to worry myself about microaggressions or feeling ostracized at Clark Atlanta University. Many in a generation that grew up with a Black president and Black Lives Matter are embracing Black colleges and universities.
College is the time when you are trying to figure out who you are. It is impossible to figure that out in a space where you not only feel like you have to assimilate to fit into that space, when they did not invite you there or they tolerate you there, but you have to prove that your existence has value. Being around my people, my culture, and my forefathers are all the ingredients that I need to fulfill my appetite of being at home at an HBCU.
Attending an HBCU is important because I can obtain a great education from my own people. This cultural connection is the top reason why students flock to HBCUs over other schools. An HBCU equips African Americans with the tools to survive and excel in a world of discrimination. Being able to relate to your peers, coming from shockingly similar backgrounds, and sharing cultural experiences also contributes to why attending an HBCU is one of the best possible choices to make as an African American student in the 21st century. The supportive atmosphere that an HBCU offers a black student is incomparable to any other institution. Being surrounded by people who are on the same missions as you, who have come from the same background, and who are on the road to higher learning and thinking is a blessing.
Attending an HBCU is taking a tour through history and using what you will eventually learn to contribute to a successful future. In comparison to PWIs, HBCUs are seen as inferior and incompetent. Many employers value credentials and degrees from predominantly white institutions. For one, HBCUs show the African American community that people of color can go to college and do great things. The black college experience shows the community that people of color can defy the stereotypes and value their education. When African American students return to their communities, they bring the college experience with them. The black college experience is something that every black student should be able to attest to. The same reasons that HBCUs were founded should be the same reasons why black students attend them.
In addition to the safe haven that is created by the student culture along with various organizations offer plenty of immersion into attending an HBCU. Historically Black Colleges and Universities have played a pivotal role in the education of African American people, and negro people internationally. Students feel their time at HBCUs better prepares them for life after graduation than Black students who go to predominantly white institutions. They are smaller higher-ed institutions with close knit communities. Most of them have fewer than 5,000 students, and their small class sizes make it easy to get to know your classmates and form meaningful relationships with your professors. Most institutions are not made with Black people in mind, while HBCUs are one of the only types of learning institutions where black people are the majority, and their culture is prioritized.
They largely shaped American history in many ways by proudly teaching Black history. A collection of subjects that sadly are often left out at traditionally at white institutions. They aim to position students to be able to fully understand themselves and be better equipped to navigate a world that is not built for them. They are amazing and can help transform your education and your life! HBCUs provide a better experience for Black students-academically and socially.
