The AFCEA Educational Foundation will offer scholarships of $5,000 to students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in an eligible major at accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) institutions in the United States. Distance-learning or online programs affiliated with one of these institutions are eligible.
At least two scholarships will be awarded annually. The scholarships are made possible by a generous contribution from AMERICAN SYSTEMS Corporation. The AFCEA Educational Foundation’s first executive director was Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., U.S. Navy (Retired). Admiral Gravely was the first African-American to command a fighting ship and to command a major warship. As a full commander, he was the first African-American to lead a ship into offensive action. He was the first African-American to achieve flag rank and eventually Vice Admiral. On May 16, 2009, the Navy christened its newest guided-missile destroyer in his name. In addition to being recognized as a Sailor, Sam Gravely is known for his commitment to education. An elementary school in Haymarket, Virginia, is named in his honor and memory. Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled and attending either a two-year or four-year accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) institution in the United States. Students may also be enrolled in an accredited distance-learning or online degree program affiliated with one of these institutions. Applications will be accepted from qualified sophomore and junior students enrolled either part-time or full-time in an eligible Bachelor of Science program. Eligible majors include the following or related fields: electrical, aerospace, systems or computer engineering; computer engineering technology; computer information systems; information systems management; computer science; physics; or mathematics. Majors directly related to the support of U.S. intelligence or homeland security enterprises with relevance to the mission of AFCEA will also be eligible. Primary factors considered in the selection process are demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and financial need. Special consideration will be given to military enlisted candidates/military veterans. | |
