Disability Policy Research Dissertation Scholars Program

Dollar Amount: Up to $20,000
Deadline: March 8, 2013
Sponsor: Social Security Administration
Award Type: Grant Money
Posted By: Reginald Claremont on 02/01/2013

The Disability Policy Research Dissertation Scholars Program provides financial support to doctoral students from diverse fields to conduct disability research projects lasting no longer than twelve months. The program is part of the Disability Research Consortium, funded by the Social Security Administration (SSA) [http://www.disabilitypolicyresearch.org/DRC]. The program is designed to allow outstanding doctoral students to leverage or supplement their ongoing research so that they may address a question or topic directly relevant to disability policy.

Funds are intended for costs such as statistical consultation, purchase of proprietary data sets, or travel essential to the conduct of the research. Projects must culminate in academic products such as presentations at scientific conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dissertation scholars are also expected to produce a podcast about their research that will be archived on the DRC website, as well as a Policy Brief describing study findings. Dissertation award stipends are made directly to the scholar in the amount of $20,000. Award recipients may be eligible to receive travel stipends to the annual DRC conference, where they will have an opportunity to present their research findings.

Eligibility
Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. institution of higher education and have reached the status of candidacy for a PhD or equivalent with qualifying exams completed, dissertation proposal approved, and investigation underway or ready to begin. A letter from the chair of the applicant’s dissertation committee must confirm: 1) the completion of all course work; 2) successful completion of qualifying exams; 3) the dissertation topic and data source(s); and 4) any progress already completed on the research. To be eligible for funding, the research proposed must be in areas consistent with the DRC themes (see http://www.mathematica-mpr.com/newsroom/releases/2012/DRC_8_12.asp). Proposed research should be completed by the end of project month 10, leaving 2 months for preparation of manuscripts and other descriptions of study findings. Priority will be given to projects using data from large data sets and/or nationally representative surveys.
