Boren Scholars and Fellows study a wide range
of critical languages, including Arabic, Hindi,
Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Boren
Awards are available to students of all proficiency
levels who are committed to enhancing their skills.

Boren Scholars and Fellows from diverse fields
of study immerse themselves in the cultures
in world regions critical to U.S. interests and
underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa,
Asia, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East

Boren Awards alumni are committed to public
service, applying their language skills, cultural
knowledge, and academic credentials in careers
critical to U.S. national security throughout the
federal government, including the Departments of
State, Defense, and Homeland Security, and USAID.

The Boren Awards are an initiative of the Defense Language
and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) at the U.S.
Department of Defense, which focuses on the combined issues
of language proficiency, national security, and the needs of the
federal workforce. DLNSEO initiatives are designed to attract,
recruit, and train future federal leaders.
Boren Scholars and Fellows make a commitment to work in the
U.S. federal government for a minimum of one year. Preference
will be given to applicants who demonstrate a desire for a longerterm
career with the federal government.
Boren Scholars and Fellows are eligible for exclusive opportunities
and preferential consideration for federal government jobs. These
include positions in the fields of:
• Diplomacy
• Defense
• Cybersecurity
• Economic Development
• Scientific Research
• Intelligence
• Medical & Public Health
• Legal Professions
• Commerce & Financial
Regulation
• Agriculture
• Energy & Sustainability
• Immigration & Border
Security
All positions with the priority agencies or their contractors will
fulfill the service requirement. Work for other federal agencies
and contractors may fulfill the service requirement, but these are
approved on a case-by-case basis.
