Accepted To Fisk Univ! What should I Expect? Posted on 03-02-2004
In Rod We Trust

I was accepted to my dream school, Fisk University about two weeks ago. I am very excited because I worked very hard to get my a** in this school. Now I need help from my fellow Fiskites to let me know what I should expect from Fisk my freshmen year and the years to come. 8) P.S. I need all the information that anyone can give me, so if you are a student of Fisk, don't be afraid to let me anything, because I am one of you all now. Spread Love 8)

Fisk University is a big joke, expect nothing. Tennessee State is everything and more, expect everything. Fisk can't touch Tennessee State.

Congratulations on your acceptance to FISK! Despite what was said in earlier replies, its always good when African-Americans are pursuing higher education. On to your questions...Expect that your fellow classmates will embrace and support you as your strive to achieve your goals. Expected the unexpected during Freshman Orientation Week. I can't say much else about that without spoiling the experience for you. Expect to get as much from FISK as YOU PUT IN. Academically, expect your freshman year to be deceptively easily unless you are a science major. Don't sleep on this year because you can use it to shore up your academic record for when your Junior level classes hit and you find yourself saying "DAMN"... Is it possible to go to FISK and be unhappy? Sure. If you aren't maximizing opportunities like cross-registration at Meharry or Vanderbilt. If bricks and mortar are more important than developing a strong sense of self as well as acquiring the skills you need to go on to law school, b-school, or graduate school. If you expect Chik-Fil-A, Starbucks, or Pizza Hut in the cafe, then yeah you're going to be disappointed. Our campus owns every inch of its "National Historic District" designation :-). The campus just installed three new computer labs and two residence halls will be wireless soon. Expect to be surrounded by the work of African-American masters such as Aaron Douglas, to behold the national treasure that is our Jubilee Singers. Expect to be surrounded by students for whom the words "history" and "tradition" are synonymous with the FISK experience. Expect to be expected to take your hat off in the building and to be frowned upon if you are still sagging and wearing a throwback ALL THE TIME after your first year. Expect to be taken seriously as a student and a peer. Expect that there will constantly be people telling you that we must be twice-as-good. Expect lots of late nights sneaking into Jubilee (if you're male) or New Livingstone (if you're female). Expect Coronation to produce beautiful versions of the girls you look at everyday and don't pay attention to. Expect that Opening Convocation will be the best your male classmates EVER look unless its a ball or After Coronation event, LOL! A word to the wise: SAVE EVERY PIECE OF PAPERWORK related to your business affairs! If there is ever a dispute, the burden of proof ALWAYS rests with the student. Start now saving your paperwork. Also, get to know the Registrar's office-it will save you A LOT of pain later-trust me! Expect that you will become part of a citywide campus that includes TSU, Vanderbilt and about 13 other colleges. Big-ups to former TSU SGA President Jamie Riley-he's one cool brother! TSU is doing big things now and they have a thoroughly modern campus but yet some of their students still expend negative energy in our direction (see above posts). In the meantime, know that there are many bridge-building students at both institutions that are working for common uplift. That's all I can say for now off the top of my head, but leave your questions on this thread and I will answer them... Remember our motto: "Her Sons and Daughters Ever on The Alter". It speaks to the legacy of excellence and service you're about to inherit.

Just going through this board, I've noticed that many students reply to questions that don't pertain to their particular institution or alma mater. Yes, its true that freshman at FISK have a curfew (midnight) and they don't have cable in their dorms rooms. But, as I inferred before, students should find the best fit for them. For some that includes cable in their room, for others it may not. Why, then, does a certain TSU alum waste their time answering these questions? I do believe the original poster asked for "fiskites" to respond. And AS ONE, I am more than happy to fulfill the obligation. What happened to respect?!?!?! We should put our best foot forward and represent the best that ALL of our institutions have to offer. I am not trying to inflame, but this just gets annoying....

Congratulations, I think Fisk is a very good school with a lot of history. Only thing people seem a little stuck up over their, but its cool though. Every time I visit my girl over thier people stop their conversation and stair at me like im some type of **** or something(and I dont wear throw backs). Most of your fun will be had on our campus (TSU) or Vanderbilt's campus, but welcome to the nashville college scene.

Check out Miss FISK 2003-04 on page 163 of the April 2004 Ebony magazine! Miss Moiro Konchellah is an example of FISK at its finest. She can also been seen stepping with her sisters of DST on the 2003 Homecoming Show DVD available on greekstepshows.com...
