Everybody always talkin bout "You dreadin' your hair", "Your "dreads" look nice. "Dread this, Dread that". What happened to the "Locs" part.
dread ( P ) Pronunciation Key (drd)
v. dread·ed, dread·ing, dreads
v. tr.
To be in **** of.
To anticipate with alarm, distaste, or reluctance: dreaded the long drive home.
Archaic. To hold in awe or reverence.
Profound fear; ****.
Fearful or distasteful anticipation. See Synonyms at fear.
An object of fear, awe, or reverence.
Why should you be terrified of them. Or why should they scare you. They are beautiful. To me anyways. I was looking at something and I don't know how true this is but they people who first looked at the people with locs, dreaded them because they looked scary or something. Like I said, don't quote me on that but I was just looking at something.
Anyways, I was just starting this post to let you all know there is nothing to Dread about locs....so let's stop dreadin' and just start locin. lol. They are LOCS not Dreads.....do no fear them, they are nothing to fear.
How do you feel about the situation.(This is just no for people with locs in their hair.)

I REALLY don't think people say "Dreads" for the purpose of meaning it's something bad. Don't nobody feel like saying "Dreadlocks" all the time. It's more of an adopted universal habit than a secret disdain for the hairstyle.

I love locs on a woman. Especially is she's dark-skinned wit white teeth, around 5'3 or 5'4, brown eyes, high cheekbones, got T & A for days , is in shape.....
Or if she looks like Mya then Christmas came early to Cuperman.....growl!!!

That's a nice conspiracy theory you got there, (someones name), but do you actually KNOW people who think this way about dreadlocks? If not, don't worry about it.

that is not a conspiracy theory.
You may carry on now...

actually, (name) is right.
The term originated around the 60's or so, with the word 'dread' among rastafarians pointing to the 'dread' or 'fear' of Jah.
You be reachin, (name).
I've heard the conspiracy theory about the "dread" in dreadlocks, but in actuality it is about the fear of Jehovah, or Jah. Everyone i know from the Caribbean says they are "dreding" their hair.
now me, I just say 'locs, because "there is nothing dreadful about them". mostly i hear white people say "dreads" or "dreadlocks". Since "dreadlocks" has a negative connotation in our society, saying "locs" ,i think, is more affirmative. It puts forth the images of SOLIDARITY, SISTER or BROTHERHOOD, LOCKING TOGETHER.
i call my friend with blond 'locs "Goldilocks"
I HAVE KINKYTWISTS, NOT LOCS. I MAY LOC IN COLLEGE, BUT RIGHT NOW I AM TOO FICKLE TO LOC. I DO OTHER PEOPLE'S THO
I read somewhere...that the reason why they call them 'dread locks' is beacause when the white folks were comin to the islands lookin for some slaves...the people (who who had their hair in locks..) looked dreadful to the white folk...therefore...dread locks...
but i dunno...I dont call em' Dread Locs...because i think of it as a negative thing...so i just call em Locs

yeah, that's the tale that i've heard as well. So it's mainly why i call them "locs". But that's only half true. There is no better way to understand the meaning of sumthin unless u go to the source tho. I've heard Carribean people say that it's in fear of Jah. But it also can be seen as a blatant form of rebellion as far as breaking out of the mold of society is concerned. Alot of conservative carribean people look down upon it, becuz it became prominent with rastafarians, and they are seen as rebels and trouble makers.
As for me, i don't have locs, but i do have natural hair. Depending on my mood i might do a fro, twists, blow it out, or just throw some water on it and slick it back. Last year i was seriously comtemplating locs. I think i'm too fickled for it tho. I see me waking up one day and being like "ummm...i think i wanna change my hair now :? ". I really think they are gorgeous tho. Especially when they are maintaineded and taken care of.

i agree. i have contemplated on and off about gettin locs but i dont think i could deal with something so permanent. i will never 4get the look on my grannys face when i told her that i was gonna get some locs one day. she was like 'girrlll now why the hell would u wanna walk around lookin all **** fo'?' :? needless to say i had a hard time trying to explain to her that there is nothin wrong with some nicely kept locs
Personally, I think locs are beautiful but they don't hold their same meaning anymore because people are getting them for fashion. It's just like women going natural because they think it's cute but not for the health of their hair or the freedom of their mind.
*cough* dont listen to the hype, DREADS ARE NOT PERMANENT....you can take apart your hair even after 5 or 7 years in dreads...it just takes a while to get em loose cause your hair is locked, and people usually take the easier route and cut em off to start over again, but my friend from Georgia State had dreads for 6 1/2 years, and she took hers apart after like 3 straight days of working on it through much cursing lol, and now has a huge fro from that whole experience
oh yeah i like the term dreads, maybe because i like the fact that someone can inflict fear on people, especially white people, just by a simple hairstyle implies GREAT power..... to think that someone fears someone because of their appearance is hilarious and very attractive to me.....i dont have dreads, but ive been considering it......heck im still trying to deal with the fact that natural hair was good for me lol, its the south georgia mentality kicking in, and its gonna be soooo much worse when i get home
*REPPING THE ONLY PERSON IN MOULTRIE GA TO BE NATURAL WOOHOOO*

Yeah, i know at girl from Barbados who combed hers out as well. It took a few days, and the chick was shedding hair all over the place, but she got them out. I think she has a perm now tho...tsk tsk. And oh yeah, i agree with Ash. The whole meaning has definately been commercialized. And look at Larry, isn't he quite the lil scholar
