Now I don't know if anything like this has been posted before, but I'll post it anyways. I was just in the Fellas Forum and I noticed that this website has a great deal of posts about light skinned vs. dark skinned. I was just wondering what your thoughts are about this. Do you think this is a problem? We finally got white people(not all, but some) to except us for the color of our skin, but then black people want to go and split our race into light skinned, medium-brown skinned, and dark skinned, which is just bringing us back to square one. How can we expect other races to accept us if we can't even do it. I know a lot of dark-skinned females who will not try to date a guy if a light-skinned female likes the same guy. They feel like they can't compete. Now I am NOT blaming the brothas for anything, but the fact that most(not all) black men will only date light females does not help the situation.
I also noticed that black people don't really start to seperate themselves into different shades of black until their teenage years, or at least by the time they start high school. I'm not saying this is a fact, but it's just what I have noticed in my 19 years of living. I never knew that I was considered brown-skinned or dark-skinned until I started high school. I've been to numerous elementary and middle schools and the issue of light-skinned vs. dark-skinned NEVER came up. Honestly, before I started high school, I never even notices that there were different shades of black people. But once I started high school, every light skinned person I met had to let it be known that they are light-skinned and I'm not. So my next question is, why do you think this issue gets bigger as we get older? I'm in college now, and my black friends always talk about how they only date light skinned men so their kids won't be dark. It's pretty sad listening to them.
So do you all think that the battle of the light-skin vs. dark-skin will ever end? Will black people ever accept the fact that we are all African-Americans, and not light, medium brown, and dark? I hope so. I know that a lot of people will blame this problem on television, because most television shows have light-skinned actresses and maybe a dark-skinned side-kick (the UPN show 'One On One' for example), but do you think there are any other reasons? Now, I'm not trying to start any arguments, I just want to know what you all think about this issue. Thanks.
PEACE!
you all know where i stand..that's where me and bush have a lot in common..we shoot from the hip and you automatically know what we stand for just by our names....
see i don't even have comment here...>>
i think their was already a post made like this but, it was more on the male perspective, what i can tell you is that it all leads back to Willie Lynch. Maybe someone else can give you more indepth.
Man....Ive heard some PRETTY crazy things since Ive been in college. From everything like "You lucky you brown-skinned, I dont date dark-skinned chicks" to " You fine as hell to be dark-skinned" People like that I stay away from because its really sad that you could be so close-minded at THIS age. Ive EVEN heard that ALL dark-skinned chicks are **** (and YES the guy was VERY serious) :? To not make it seem like dark-skinned is the **** I even know guys who stereotype all lightskin females as being stuck up and high maintenance. You'd be surprised at the stuff guys are content with. My own BROTHER doesnt even date african american females  I just laugh at them becuase in the end they'll NEVER find a soul mate or even a GIRLFRIEND for that matter.
I am a light skin female and i have exp the whole color struck thing. I had a friend who was dark and she used to call me things like **** yellow... She madie it sound like it was supposed to be a joke, but i know she had a lot of animosity towards light skin women. I do think really its a bunch of crap

"I think its just a propensity of light skinned females being extradonairly freaking beautiful than it is for the darker females. So there because a stereotype that light skinned are generally prettier than darker skinned. Which is true, but has ZERO to deal with the actual beauty of each individual."
What do you mean light-skinned girls are generally prettier than dark-skinned girls? You actually believe that? Maybe I misunderstood what you wrote, but could you elaborate please?
It's funny you show your anger saying "They will never" because they don't want to date a sister or some dark skinned...seems like you are holding a grudge against those men who do have a preference....which is a contradiction to what you said the first 2 sentences. ^.^
I guaruntee you, 9 times out 10 that brother's who don't and won't date Black women won't because of ignorance, not just because of personal preference.
And the same ignorance that Black people have when they say things like "you are cute for a dark skin girl" or "Dark skin girls are ****" is that same ignorance brotha's who don't like Black women, have. Her statement's don't reallly contradict.
I think that a majority of the men who only date light-skinned females don't have a real reason for doing so. They CLAIM that it's just a preference, but it's only a "preference" because that's all they see on t.v. If all of a sudden, a bunch of purple-skinned women showed up in the music videos and started becoming more popular, I think that black men would say "screw light and dark-skinned women. I'm going for the purple-skinned women now because their on every magazine cover, music video, and movie screen" The men would then claim that purple-skinned women are just a new "preference" of theirs, but in reality, they are just doing what they see on t.v.
Maybe that wasn't a good example, but all I'm trying to say is that in the end, men just want a trophy. And whatever television says that a trophy woman should look and act like, that's what men are gonna go after. Don't get mad fellas. It's just my opinion.
PEACE!
The amazing thing is, this same social behavior is repeated among Latinos.
As far as black people go, if you think we weren't color conscious earlier in life, think about your snaps from elementary school:
Your momma's so dark. . .
Your momma's hair is so ****. . .
etc, etc. . .
hmm, as much as people say it ain't a problem, we have a melanin-related post ever fiscal quarter on this site  ...
idk i'm backwards. Growing up i was one of the few liteskin girls n my age group of friends, and all the chocolate girls grew grownup bodies before me, and so they got more guy attention. Me, being young, thot maybe it was a complexion thing, and didn't like my color, and prayed for summer so my skin would look more like theirs(the one black girl at the pool TRYING to get a tan  ). The liteskin girls i knew had sucky personalities, so i didn't think they were are pretty as the more down-to-earth chocolate girls. N people wud automatically assume i was stuck-up like the rest of 'em cuz i was that liteskin-longhair prototype.
I still wish i was darker(and love the summer!), but now that i'm older i realize women of all complexions are beautiful. MEN of allcomplexions are beautiful(but i'm still partial to chocolate boys, jst MMMM blacker the berry...)
if e'eryone wud grow up and look at personalities, not complexion, we cud all b happy....
