HBCU or Ivy? Posted on 04-05-2005

I've always wanted to go to Howard University because I have family in DC, I love the atmosphere, and I basically believe the school is top notch. I've been accepted and I've received a nice financial aid packet. However, I was just recently accepted into a prestigious (white) university that my peers and educators expect me to attend because of the name. Certain individuals feel that I would be making the wrong choice if I choose the HBCU while others feel the opposite. Most tell me to follow my heart but I still don't know which is the right choice. I need to know what someone else would do if they were in my situation. What would matter the most? If you had the opportunity to go to an "Ivy" type school, could/would you choose the HBCU or the Ivy? How would you choose? Signed Need To Choose

Follow your heart and definitely DON'T choose a school just because of a name...Some of the smaller liberal arts colleges and HBCU's suit some while the larger Ivies suit others...find where you fit in and follow through...

i love HBCUs but it all depends on you. I love the campus life, small class sizes, family environment, and the enstillment of pride they put in you. I also find the courses very interesting. An example is my history class. Instead of merely studying world history, we also look at how it relates to Africans & Blacks. It puts everything in perspective and lets you know that we juss didn't pop up during slavery and dissapear til the civil rights movement. My suggestion is that you visit both types of schools. Try and do an overnight at each and get the general feel of the campus. Each HBCU campus is different so everything I can tell u about is from CAU. Good Luck!

You can't go wrong with your decision. Howard is not the hbcu to provide a small classroom enviornment, it's the opposite. You'll have a large math class with a dude taht can't speak english. But if you go to an Ivy school, they'll take care of you and make sure that your grades look nice at gradution. But seeing as though you are ivy material, you'll easily do well at howard. Just make sure you're at the top of your class whereever you go and you outlook for life will be nice.

No don't get me wrong, i love hbcu's esp. Howard. But you gotta tell the young people what's really up, let them know that they won't pass Alg I or PreCal unless they already know their stuff, b/c the main classes are too big for teachers with limited abilities. But I'm sure she's already aware of the education she's gonna get outside of the classrooms by teachers and alumni who want her to succeed in life. Both options are great.

Not outside of visits, but my girlfriend goes there. Is my view different from your take or something?

IVY schools have large classrooms, with teachers who are hard to understand as well. If I were you I would go with my heart and go to HU. Personally, I always wanted to attend HU but I couldn't afford it, I got a big work-study program but why take out thousand of dollars in loans when I can damn near go to school for free at a public instutiotn, but I do wish I went to a HBCU. I've been on IVY college campuses and the atmosphere for a minority is a little depressing, the one I went to had alot of down low issues of rascism involving the white students, and it was extremely segregated, but as people say the name will look REAL good on paper To your surprise the name of a school won't always get you a job, my friend grad. from UVA a highly ranked, well known school and she couldn't find a job to save her life, she had to settle and go with a place she didn't want and ended being unemployed months later. Also HOWARD is a VERY well known institution, so don't get caught up in the white school vs. black school debate. You can be just as sucessful with a degree from a HBCU as you can from any other Ivy univ.

its NOT the name of the school you go to but the name you make for yourself at the school you choose to attend that decides how powerful you are when you enter the work field. Remember: Howard has a good name too So you choose the school that is a perfect fit for you. ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING the Economy is NOT its best right now, so I'd go with the school that gives you the most money for now...with all seriousness, save what you can now so you can graduate later
