I had a conversation with one of my homegirls some weeks ago... she brought up how the history club i'm apart of shouldn't focus on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual freedom and liberation of Black people from society and this country.... that a "HISTORY" club should reflect just that....HISTORY...EVERYbody's history - not just Black people's history (she's Black, herself...attends a PWI).... I explained to her that just like with many courses at an HBCU, we receive a lot of knowledge and a certain type of intellectual exchange we wouldn't receive at a PWI....nor have we received at any other White school prior to coming to college.... that at many of those schools, they mask "history" classes with much of their history...and half-truths or distorted story-telling of everyone else's..... so why NOT our "history" club tell what all you wouldn't get in being apart of "White America"? okay...well....she was saying that the formal education and history we learn in America will naturally be reflected by whoever is the majority of that time. I challenged this theory, asking if she feels that once Hispanics are STATISTICALLY the majority, will they in fact be the ones running and controlling things to the degree that Whites have always ran and control things in this country and even the majority of this world?? She laughed and said "no"...but that really does raise an interesting question. Would they? And it's not about what THEY want to do or are capable of doing...the question is about what they would at that point be ALLOWED to do...by certain people of this world. So what do you all think?

Nope...it won't happen..."they" are not gonna let it happen...hell, I'm sure they're already mad about the Williams sisters and Tiger Woods taking over their sports...they're not gonna let it get TOO far...especially when it comes to government... and regardless of who's the majority...our history will always be taught covered in a white blanket...it shouldn't be but it is...

Well in that case...why aren't the "U.S. History" and "World History" courses taught at predominantly White elementary, middle, and high schools and colleges and univeristies just called "White/European-American/Caucasian-American History"? Because that's all they are....practically... And even moreso than that...one thing I forgot to mention in my initial post is that ummmmmmmm people TOO OFTEN forget that BLACK HISTORY is EVERYONE'S HISTORY.... if it weren't for Black people....this country would be in the gutter...come on, now - let's be real.... so naming our organization simply the "HISTORY" Club is quite accurate...because we ARE a SIGNIFICANT amount of not only U.S. history, but WORLD history, PERIOD.... yet we are so often left out....we shouldn't have to call our history "Black history"....we are more than that.... just like last night, I attended an event at one of the local colleges...where Cornel West, a famous author, motivational speaker, philosopher, and Princeton University religion professor, spoke... and he was introduced by this White guy...who made the statement "Cornel West is not only THE leading African-American philosopher of our day...but he is THE leading philosopher in our day." Everybody...MANY Whites....MANY Blacks....were like AMEN, AMEN... whether they say it or not, THEY (White people) know that we are more than just our color....that in certain areas, we have been the BEST, PERIOD...NOT JUST AS REPRESENTATIONS OF OUR RACE.... WHEN WILL WE!??!

TWO WEEKS?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! OKAY, SO BEING THAT YOUR SCHOOL WAS 88% WHITE, I AM GUESSING THAT THE CURRICULUM FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR DID NOT CONSIST OF TEACHING ANYTHING BESIDES THE HISTORY OF WHITE PEOPLE?!?!?!?! that is absolutely ridiculous....TWO WEEKS?!?! are you SERIOUS!? and tragically...that is exactly what i'm talking about....number one, for you as a Black person to be content with two weeks of learning about our history... and number two, those two weeks being pretty much the average time alotted for us to be taught about our history in this system.... both speak volumes.... wow.....amazing.....truly amazing.....

2 weeksSOLELY on balck pople....the rest of the time, we talked about blacks as they came along in history...fredrick douglas came up during the civil war, colin powell came up during the gulf war...i mean what we need a month on blacks? other wise it's be a black history class....lemme remind you we ain't spend no 2 weeks on no mexicans, jews ect ect...i think that's sufficient...i think every history class should be like that...and it was even generous to us because it spent like 2 weeks soley on us...and mentioned some stuff that you won't get from a regualr history class...i think our contirbutions to this nations history and world history is worth about 2 weeks solely on us...otherwise, a black history class would do...

i never said they don't teach it....it's all about how MUCH of it they teach...and WHICH PARTs they choose to allow us to learn....

wow....what an ignorant statement... so on top of two weeks being not only okay for the time you got to learn Black history....but on top of that, it should've been Black history month for this to happen? "Black history" month should be every month, dear....not just the only one out of the WHOLE YEAR that has less than 30 days....

and it pains me so much to know that those are really what so many Black people think our history consists of....even those of other races....like all we ever were to this country were slaves and victims of Jim Crow.... a shame....

that is just the tipping of the ice....it's a start, MAYBE...but people of various African lineages have not received enough credit for ANY contribution made to this country, world, and society since the very beginning of time.... Did your teacher also happened to mention that many Blacks of this country have for the past 200+ years not received "enough credit" (IF any credit at ALL) for our inventions, discoveries, and improvements? Probably not...and if so, to which extent... Easy for her/him to say where Africa went wrong... WHAT ABOUT WHERE AMERICA WENT WRONG?!?
