Hampton or Howard? Posted on 10-12-2005

Wassup y'all? I need some help. I'm choosing which colleges I want to apply to and it is between Hampton and Howard. I have visited both schools and like them both. Can y'all please tell me some TRUE things about both that would help me decide between the two? (ex. safety at Howard, better academics, better social life, dorms, etc.)

Safety @ Howard: Plain and simple, don't be stupid. This is the city and if you decide to walk around by yourself at 1 am then you will be in danger. Academics: First of all HU has 12 schools and college to chose from, so they will very likely have what your looking for. It is challenging because not only do you have to deal with the same difficulty of work, but there are certain teachers who really pack it on hard and make you earn your grade. Social Life: At Howard there around 30 to 40 thousand flyers handed out each year (exaggerated somewhat, but it really is so many of those). Each one of these flyers has different social events on and off compus. If your the party person then there's, if anything, too many parties around here. I myself am a Jesus so my social life, on campus, is composed of activities w/ different campus ministries. Off campus there's so many different things to do. Just remember it's in D.C. Dorms: For freshman females you have the quad and the annex. It depends on what type of person you are when it all comes down to it. If you are used to having the best of things then the annex is for you, but if you can handle going some time w/o a/c and such then you might not want to be in certain halls in the quad. Overall, the dorms are what you would expect for a HBCU though. Do not at all expect anything resembling a 5-year old dorm at a PWI. Problems: Administration...All I can tell you is to pray. Some people have a lot of serious problems w/. Me, myself, I've actually had a good experience w/ them. Anytime there's problems I was able to go to the infamous "a" building and iron things out without a ridiculously long wait. Beware nevertheless -a nice amount of the food in the cafe ****. Some people actually like it even though they say it's disgusting though, so it's an individual judgement on that. -If you are looking for the best possible college experience Howard is the college for you. There's a reason why no other HBCU has as many students as we do. Every aspect isn't perfect, but there's obviously something that draws as many successful black people as it does. BTW We're better than Hampton ahum....j/k, the institute isn't a bad school at all, but it would be better for someone who goes there to answer questions because in all truth, I'm biased.

Choose whichever school you are most comfortable with. I hated Howard's environment surrounding the campus, but you might love it! Hampton's campus is okay, but I would never go there because it is where I am from. Make a good decision based on you! Good luck!

Howard is up their when it comes to business but both are pretty good. Hampton is smaller but you can get the 5 year MBA here with good scores. At Hampton you gotta form fun or look for it but at Howard its everywere and right in your face. Then again it is in D.C! If all else fails check which one gives you the most money :-D

yeah, at Hampton you have to go looking for fun because the town is so small and it revolves around the school. I think Hampton's school of b is on point, but for the five year MBA you have to have a certain SAT score or gpa. You definately need to see which school gives you the most money cause Hampton doesn't give out that much and both schools are expensive. Both schools have great reputations, so anywhere you go you'll be set. Hampton also has a lot of rules that you have to deal with and if you're not good with them you might not need to go cause you will be OUT BY FIVE!! Hampton also has a beautiful campus that you know they take pride in, but if you're not down with the small town vibe then you also need not go.
