HBCU Factoids! Posted on 02-01-2006
WileECoyote06

In honor of black history month (and also to further my own pursuit of information to be turned into questions for my Honda team), I think we should use the days of February to post HBCU factoids. They don't have to be about your own school, and every bit of information helps. To begin I have two: Virginia State University was the first college for blacks to be state-supported. Wiley College was the first college for blacks found west of the Mississippi River. ADD ON!

AGGIE PRIDE!!!!! The statue of the Greensboro four is right outside my dorm so I had the pleasure of waking up to A&T's Alma Mater being sung by the University Choir right outside my window.

Before there was Venus and Serena Williams, there was Althea Gibson, a FAMU alumnus who was the first black woman to win the U.S. Open.

Xavier University Of Louisiana is... -#1 in the nation in the number of Doctor of Pharmacy degrees awarded to African Americans. since 1927 it has graduated nearly 25% of the 6,500 Black pharmacists practicing in the United States. It is one of only two pharmacy schools in Louisiana. -#1 in the nation in placing African American students into medical schools -#1 in the nation in the number of African American undergraduates receiving degrees in Biology and the life sciences -the only Catholic and historically Black university
