Do any college bound seniors or current students...

know of any untapped or not-so-well-known scholarship offers that provides significant monies(well ANY money is significant)? C'mon guys help the younger generation out!

the GATES millenium scholarship pays for EVERYTHING all the way through graduate school...we've had quite a few people win it from my school...but you have to qualify for the Pell Grant in order to be eligible...so I couldn't apply just search it on google because I can't link it for some reason

^^^I agree...I didn't apply because I didn't think my GPA would be high enough. Its a long process, but WELL worth it in the end!

Local scholarships are good too. Any money can make a difference! Elks Lodges offer scholarships, Wal-Mart, Target, some banks(US Bank, Wells Fargo), Mickey D's, Burger King, Etc...

sign up @ http://www.fastweb.com it connects you to scholarships based on your qualifications. nothin pisses me off more than writin up an essay for a scholarship, then readin in the fine print that my GPA isn't high enough / my parents aren't poor enough / i live in the wrong state; etc, and fastweb keeps that from happening. and don't always shoot for the scholarship with the highest award $$, apply for the little ones, too. it'll be easier to win 5 or 6 $500 scholarships than that one $2000 scholarship.

Definitely do Gates! But please file your FAFSA so you can know if you qualify for the federal Pell Grant. It was a complete waste of my time. Do local things. Local scholarships always have a less applicant pool than the larger scholarships. Just try and don't give up. *SOMETHING* will come along. Even if it's just $1500. That $1500 will help. Try your local, Delta Sigma Theta Chapters, AKA Chapters, Local High School Alumni Associations, etc.

what's the pell grant and why does that make you eligible for gates?

The Pell Grant Program is a need-based, undergraduate grant program funded by the federal government. Its on a financial need basis. Most , not all, students who qualify for the Pell Grant are from families with an income of 35 K or less, hint need based... The Pell Grant makes you eligible for Gates because that is one of the requirements in order to qualify for the scholarship. The scholarship is basically need based as well. Qualifications for Gates: -are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American; -are a citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the United States; -have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (un-weighted); -will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as a full time, degree-seeking freshman in the fall; -have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in the community service, extracurricular or other activities; and -meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. (Eligibility for Federal Pell Grant can only be determined through the submission of a Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid Programs).
