I done been in many ghettos and poor eras, and im thinking about going to Howard. I've heard that the surrounding neighborhood is real bad, people getting robbed and ****. Could some1 from tell me their experience
its in an urban area...what do u expect...D.C isn't known for being the safest place in the world but take necessary precautions and you'll be good...don't base ur decision on not attending a great school solely because of what you heard about the surrounding neighborhood
I was down in DC a couple of weeks ago. It's not NEARLY as bad as people make it out to be. Yeah it's in the hood, so I mean you're not going to see the cleanest streets, but the only time you would really have to worry about is late at night and that's it.

DC was a shock to me (from surburban Cinicinnati) but the urban environment helped build who I am today. The DC experience really helped when I went to NYC after I graduated...
The area around HU is urban, but there is a ton of urban gentrification going on from U street on up to 7th/Georgia Ave.
HU is in the hood, but its not nearly as bad as folks think.
Im goin to howard this fall class 2011 i went through the same questions i heard all this stuff about it being really bad ppl had me thinking my teachers would be crackheads or something !! when i went down for open house it really wasnt that bad it kinda reminded me of south orange nj ( you probablly never head of it) theyre building million dollars apartments so i cant be that bad....it not like the georgetown area but its not dante's inferno either !! be carefull and dont be stupid and ur good to go <--- thats what current students keep tellin me.....keep this in mind yale is in the hood too !
Word yNg_giFtd_blk!!!
HU and the community aint nothing to fear. Coming from an old school'r like me, I entered HU more than a few yrs ago ('89) when DC was REALLY bad, then I decided to live there for 15+ yrs after entering school! DC is a great city. Howard, Shaw, U-Street-Cardoza... all this is great (the areas around HU). I wasn't born in DC, but I spent the majority of my life in DC and I consider myself an adopted Washingtonian... its my adopted home... shoot, I just got back from a 1wk vacation in DC 2 days ago. I still feel like its home!!! (This is real talk coming from a dude who graduated from a surburban Cincinnati HS where I was the only brotha!).
You just need to understand the city, the people and the lingo (i.e.: "case quarter", "bama", "shawty", "yung" ("yung'n") and "junk" (pronounced: "jonk")), the music (go-go is old school but it's still very DC, so don't diss it in front of locals...).
My 1st year living in Drew Hall (male frosh dorm) was a little ruff... but I learned quickly and how to survive in the city. Honestly... that was the BEST prep I got from HU. It really helped me to move on to bigger and better things (like working (Wall Steet) and living (Harlem) in NYC and Northern NJ (Newark)). If you can live in DC for 4+ years as a student, YOU CAN LIVE ANYWHERE! Thats my word!
I'm rambl'n... I'm just saying, Don't Worry About HU and the surrounding neighborhood. On the real, anything you see or experience will make you a MUCH GREATER person than you are today... Word Is Bond!
Side note: I love DC so much, I'm buying some property there to be converted into low-cost rental units. Its my way of having a darn good reason to return to DC on a regular basis (eventhough I've settled in the midwest)!

Hmmm, interesting...
I'm thinking about relocating back to DC and a low-cost ANYTHING sounds real good right about now. Hit me up, fellow Bison...
you have nothing to worry about. I live in DC and my sisters high school is right across the street from Howard && im telling you its not NEARLY as bad as people claim yea there's goin to be crime jus like every other city in america because lets face it DC is NOT the suburbs but it could be much worse especially if Howard were in some parts of Southeast, DC...the area Howard is in gets safer and safer every year && its a great school i dont suggest passing on going there because of the neighborhood because its realli not that bad..
Uh... everybody sayin its safe danotorious... I mean Beezy's in tha building regardless, ...
Like su whoo gang, and if u aint wit it, u in tha food chain...
