Transfer to Spelman? Is it worth it?

Hey yall, For all the spelman women on board, how is it? I want to transfer for the spring 09 semester and I was just wondering if it'd be worth it since i go to Clark atlanta right now...

What exactly are you looking to get out of your college experience that you are not getting now from CAU? Knowing the answer to that, what credits will carry over, etc. helps in determining whether its worth it. They are similar yet VERY different schools.

I dunno, CAU just isnt doing it for me. Unprofessionalism, disorganization, ghetto-ness..LOL.. I've always wanted to go to Spelman just because of the prestige and the reputation that the school has. I just recently found out that CAU has had problems with their accredidation in the past and i'm very upset that I wasnt informed about this..The school is just very shady. Just last week our president resigned(he was forced to) because of his mismanagement of funds and he was just doing a poor job at running the school.. I'm just tired of it...I dont mind being around all women..and spelman students are at a much higher academic level than CAU students. I get bored in class because I feel like i'm in a high school course. It's not challenging at all.. I think im gonna go ahead and take your advice about seeing what credits will carry over. Thank you Summer731. And btw, do you go to Spelman?

That's at a lot of HBCU's. That is why I transferred, from a HBCU, to a predominately white school that has a spirit of excellence! I'm not saying all white schools are like that, but the one I attend the staff and professors are very professional and they have a positive attitude. My experience has been wonderful, and I will be glad to donate money back to the school after I graduate.

I have been blessed with respect to attending an HBCU (undergrad) and PWI (graduate) with professionalism. Honestly, I enjoyed my experience at each institution. As far as transferring, since you are still early in your college career, it’s a minimum impact. I recommend making an appointment with a Spelman admission counselor. Discuss your intentions and interest with the admission counselor. This will give you a feel for the complexity of transferring. If majority of your credits transfer, you should probably follow your heart. Good Luck!

Leftywefty, I do not go to Spelman, but my cousin does and I have a lot of friends and family who attended. They ALL loved it. Without question it has a more prestigious reputation than CAU. Not trying to diss CAU, but it is, what it is. In fact my cousin who is there now, turned down full rides to a few PWIs. So far no regrets. smc112- I'm happy for you. If the PWI and the "smooth operation" that you say comes with them makes you happy - DO YOU! As I stated above, my cousin turned down full rides to schools with no supposed red tape in their game, to attend Spelman. She is just one of many who make these decisions. Another cousin transferred from Stanford to Morehouse and he too, has no regrets. Its a personal thing and as they say, whatever floats your boat. TSUblueTiger - Ditto to everything you wrote and I am glad that both experiences worked for you. That is what a lot of folks do. HBCU - undergrad, PWI - grad. Another cousin of mine graduated Spelman and went off to Cornell afterwards. She admits to this day had she not had the GREAT Spelman experience, she would probably not have even considered, nevermind finished Cornell. Success and Happiness is what you make it!

Hey! I'm in my 3rd year at CAU, and I'm transferring to Howard. (Why this late?) I'm behind..I'm not transferring to Howard because it has a bigger name than CAU I'm transferring because it's a better school for me to finish up at. Girl! Don't get me wrong I've almost applied to Spelman so many times, but every HBCU has its problems..you just don't hear about many problems at Spelman and Morehouse because nobody really cares if they have problems because its SPELMAN AND MOREHOUSE. If you are not comfortable with CAU leave ASAP!! Because you can cross reg in the AUC you will hopefully get to take most of earned credits, but make sure you do it ASAP if you want to go, because I do have friends that were set back from going to Morehouse and Spelman after a year at CAU. Do what's in your heart sweetie!! OH YEAH BEFORE I FORGET...I'M NOT SURE OF YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION, BUT SPELMAN IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN CAU..

Great Post! Honestly, I wanted to attend an HBCU for graduate school. After I finished at TSU, I relocated to a city that does not have an HBCU. Therefore, I had to attend a PWI to further my education. Thumbup1
