Preppy Girls at Howard University? Posted on 05-12-2008
MissIndia

I am applying to Howard University this fall; Early Action! Whew! I am really, really preppy. I talk proper, i wear hollister, american eagle yada yada yada. I was wondering, considering that HU is a historically black college, how would I fit in? Are there other girls who are similar to me there?

Black people have many different shades personalities and ways of life. Just because Howard is an HBCU does not mean everyone is the same because all black people contrary to popular belief are not the same. Im sure at Howard there will be plenty of people whom you can relate too just dont forget college is also about meeting new and different people .

I did not attend Howard University. However, I graduated from an HBCU. From personal experience, there is lots of diversity within the black race. You will find black people that listen to smooth jazz, pop, rock, heavy metal, r & b, rap, etc. You will find black people that dress preppy, urban, business professional, etc. As far as talking proper, most serious college students will use correct English on a regular basis. HU has a reputation for having classy brothers and sisters. Therefore, I am confident you will fit in at Howard University. Best wishes with your future endeavors.

L0l @ "i talk proper" ..like students at HBCUs are chandelier-swinging monkeys who communicate thru grunts or something. english is english.. if you speak it, chances are you'll meet someone who does too at an institute of higher education. and anybody who's in college and still focusing on what people are wearing- probably shouldn't even be there. be yourself, regardless.

Same thing I was thinkin'. You might have a bit of a culture shock depending on where you hail from, but that's just across the board. College is a melting pot of people and cultures, whether it's PWI or HBCU, so don't sweat it. You'll be all right. Howard, it seems like you guys are going to be getting a whole lot of prepsters this Fall...

I recommend reading a book called "Acting Black" it talks about the differences that Northwestern University and Howard University Alumni had at each school as black students. And let me just clear up this misconception, black people are so diverse you will meet young women who are preppy, into rock, upperclass, middle class, working class. Any hbcu you attend, especially Howard you will see how diverse the black race is far as socioeconomics, education, etc.

I agree alot of people think because u attend an hbcu ur horizon cant expand as far as meeting a diverse group of people goes. Me and my mother had this convo quite a few times. Just because the majority of the people there are black they all come from different walks of life they just have the same skin color.
