from prep school to hbcu

hi, im interested in attending spelman, but i currently go to a school that is a prep school and only 7% of the student body is black. I need something different. I was wondering do you think i would adjust to spelman? I know the environments would be completely different, but honestly i hate prep school. I'm sick of being the spokeswomen for the entire black race, and I'm the only black student in most of my classes. White students consistently get mad when you hangout with another black student because they say we are "self segregating" ourselves. when i explain that we just happen to have alot in common, and that they themselves are self segregated too, they look at me like i'm crazy. Plus there are no dating opprotunities, and i know it isn't me because when i hangout with my friends from the nearest public school many black guys approach me. Its just that the black guys at my school ALL date white girls because they feel it is a "step up". And i'm not interested in white guys nor do they seem interested in me. I feel that spelman is where i should go, but are there alot of students there from prep schools where they were one of very few black students? Anybody in a similar situation? Would i be teased for "acting like a white girl" which most of my friends from public school say i do just because i'm not the best dancer, i talk properly, and i dress from Saks Fifth Avenue, Ralph Lauren, and Jcrew. I'm guessing talking properly wouldn't be an issue since this is college and everyone is there to get educated. I'm just scared I'll be really different. Help? anyone.

On the contrary, Spelman has many students that are just like yourself. Matter of factly, you will probably find friends that grew up in a background similar to yours at any HBCU, not just Spelman.

I got to a prepatory high school [a law one at that]. The difference between our schools is, thw white race is a minority there. Its very diverse ranging from asians, east Indians, african americans, white, hispanics.... but ican relate to you because I hang out with the students who have similar intrests as I, which are things most of the black kids call "white" things. [I personally think things such as interests and hobbies, have no race attached to them]. You'll be just fine. I mean mostly it depends on you and your personality as a person, not so much as you being "white washed", but some people may not like you, thats just the cycle of life. Dont worry about the ones who don't, attract the ones who do. [Im only 16 but believe me, I had to learn this early on]

I completely understand where you're coming from. I've attended an all white exclusive private school for 13 YEARS! There's only 4 black people in my ENTIRE class. I got accepted to Spelman in December. I really want to attend because it would be a totally different experience for me. My sister went to Spelman and she said that she had a reverse culture shock. Going from an all white school to a black school is going to be different, but I'm sure that it will be a positive experience.

I'd figure you get teased regardless of whether it was PWI or HBCU. I go to a PWI right now and still get teased for 'acting white'...what is this?! And I wish a white student would come up to me claiming I was self-segregating. I barely hang out with African-American students as it is simply because most of them don't like me. They feel that I'm a sell-out and that I try too hard to be something I'm not. Black. Just ignore the ignorance and do what you gotta do. If Spelman is where you wanna go, then go. ANY college environment would require you to create your own social niche, so don't be scared. That's just life. Oh, and don't be afraid to be different. It's what makes you, well, you.
