What Does A Promise Ring Mean?

Ladies, if a guy gives you a promise ring, what does it mean? Is it like a practice engagement ring? What is he "promising"? Is there a promise ring finger? I never did understand this concept.

I don't think there's a finger for it, but I did receive a promise ring and he broke that promise with the quickness. Guys just do it to promise a girl different things. He promises to always be there for her, He promises to never cheat on her, He promises to love her even if something happens between them. He is basically trying to show committment to her. Anyway, this is my interpretation of it.

What you do? Nah I'm just playin. Ok cool. Thanks for your interpretation. So it's not a practice engagement ring. If a guy "promises to be hers" is that closer to being a practice engagement ring? Anybody else?

No, no promise ring from me. Like I said, I didn't/don't understand em. They seem like an engagement ring to me. So I just skipped the middle man and "put a ring on it".

Maybe but it doesn't carry the weight of an engagement ring.

Mkay. I think a promise ring is just another marketing ploy created by women in order to get more jewelrys!

Ok well it depends, but I do have a promise ring, and have had it for quite some time...even though I'm only 17. In a way it can be seen as a pre-engagement ring. I know alot of seniors in high school who get them or even some freshman/sophomores in college. What it means to me is that eventually we will be engaged, but considering our age it's probably best that we wait a few more years. I think that if you are young, but have been dating someone for a long time...like over 3 years...you may not be ready for an actual engagement but you do want some promise of an engagement to come. That way you know you aren't wasting your time. I know that if I were actually engaged right now my parents would flip even though I'll be 18 soon. So, if everything goes as planned...waited 3 years for a promise ring....wait another 3 for an engagement ring...and will hopefully get married soon after college.
