MTV reality show Posted on 05-10-2004
Mr. Chicagosocialite

So check this out! My friend and I joke all the time about MTV reality shows and how it would be crazy to be on one. So, as a joke I responded to one of their casting calls called “first time”. It’s a show that will follow people doing something for the first time (starting a new career, going to college etc). In my case it would be first time in college. As I said we joked about shows like this before but I always thought it was impossible to get picked. I’m sure they receive tons of information from people wanting to be on these shows, so I understand how not being picked is common. I saw that they were doing a new show so I applied. The funny thing is this time they responded. I haven’t officially gotten asked to do the show but things are looking good. They like my story line and think my first year of college will be really interesting. I’m in the second to last phase of the selection process. I’m not sure where they are going creatively with the show but I hope it’s nothing like College Hill. I’m going through the process to see how far I can get but if I am selected I don’t think I’m going to accept it for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is I don’t think anything good could come of it. As an African-American male I’m sure their main goal would be to make a complete fool of me. I don’t think corporate America would take me seriously after such a show. Second, I think it would draw unnecessary attention to me. Third, my parents would frown upon it. Fourth, I don’t even think Howard would allow them to follow me around campus. If I were selected, the taping would be intense. MTV wants to tape me from the moment I arrive on campus in August until finals in May. I may be jumping the gun here because I don’t even know if they are going to pick me but I’m pretty sure I’m not going to do it. What do u guys think about it?

My friend and I saw that on MTV's website and we were joking around with each other about signing up for the show. Me being a black woman, they would probably portray me as an aggressive person, like Omarosa from The Apprentice or Coral from The Real World, and I'm not even like that. So, yeah, I would be skeptical of the show and how they would present me to millions of people around the nation and world.

I don't think you should do it. I only say this because right now I'm taking a critical thinking class at my high school. The class is focused majority on media, and how it portrays nonwhite folks. A lot of the topics in class are about reality TV shows. I've learned a lot in this class, and I say don't do it. For the simple fact that reality TV shows aren't actually all real!! There's a lot of acting, and drama. They probably don't want to see a black man bettering himself...the point of TV shows like this is to draw the audience attention...and why does white America wanna see a black man succeeding? So while they're walking around with you on your every day activities, they might bring sum "crop" to distract you or make you have conflict with, just to make the show interesting. Oh yeah and you whole day for a whole year in college can't all fit in a 30 to an hour that only comes on once a week reality show. Also I know (being that I'm going to be a film/ radio/TV major, and have had a lot of experience) that people can take a piece of video that's has one view, and turn it by just editing it to look like something else. (For those who don't get wha I'm talking about) Say he does do this reality TV show and they do follow him and blah blah blah. They tape him going to class, doing well in class, getting his first A...and filming him study. Then they tape him going to "a" party, hanging out with friends, having fun, and then maybe (not saying he will) brought home his first F. I bet you the reality TV show is going to show him not studying, partying a lot (when he was only at one party) hanging out and then bringing home his first F. So you get what I'm saying? To sum all this up, I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD DO IT!! This is a perfect reason why I want to become a producer so I can put black people in the media in a positive way, doing positive things!!

Congrats on getting that far Socialite. Before you get too bent on not wanting to do it, think about what it might do for America getting a good look at a prestigious HBCU. I know if I had a good look at an HBCU early, I would definitely want to go and I would try and influence my friends to do so as well. You are a positive brotha, and I dont think they could make a fool out of you if they tried. But it is up to you, so good luck with the last few phases, and if ya get it, rep Howard to the fullest.

Yeah ma, I uhhh think you talkin' about my boy H Pirate. Check it, socialite, I have to agree with these two (cuteincali18 and H Pirate). I think that on the intellectual level that you are on, it would be too difficult for them to make a fool out of you, plus you would be setting yourself up as a role model for black kids, whether they be in the ghettos or in the mansions. If you get the chance, I think it would be an excellent opportunity for you.

UMMM seeing wha the other replies were I can see their arguement too, that it would be good way to show other highschool kids about an HBCU school if we were talking about CNN and NBC n shyt, but we're talking about MTV.. (BET) if you look at their reality shows, theirs nothing but drama and kaos. You should get a lot of information about the show before u make your decision. If it's coo then go head and do it...if it seems like a bunch of bull then hey I wouldn't do it. Usuallllly they'll have u sign a contract, most of that hidden ****is within the contract so ya kno...post up how things are going!!
