Man I don't know how I came upon this site but I am so thankful I did! I have a million and one questions that it seemed like no one could answer until now. so here we go... lemme give a lil bg info. the name is TK. I'm currently a college sophomore at a small private skool in illinois. i've lived on the southside of Chicago all my life. I am mos def transferring to Howard for the Fall of 2008 to finish out my junior and senior year. Not knowing what I do now about HBCUs, I didnt apply to any (trust me I felt like sh*t afterwards) and want to get that black college experience both socially and educationally. with all that said... 1. anybody know how it goes down with transfer students? anyone transferred and going through the transition? I mean, once accepted, do you go through the same orientation as freshmen or are u treated as if ur a returning student. 2. anybody an advertising major? im coming to Howard specifically for the School of Communications cuz i heard it was one of the best. well, the best ppl do the best things so i mean its only right i go, lol. lemme stop 3. what goes down at the open houses? im coming to the one in september. would i be able to follow students n stuff like that? also, are there any events where prospective students can stay on campus with a student for a night like a shadow day.i know my skool does that 4. anybody know which dorms transfer students are typically assigned to? 5. whats the poetry scene like? imma slam poet and i just gotta know whether or not there's spots on and off campus where i can go to spit 6. im told the theater department is hot too. i've been doing drama since my freshman year in highschool as well as working with this place called gallery 37 where I got paid to do it. if any of u have heard of Second City Theater Improv, i've worked for them too. so, i know for a fact i have to be in the drama club(s) on campus cuz its not even an option not to. are there like auditions n stuff. 7. Howard is notorious for parties. im going to be honest, i cant dance for sh*t! but i like to go to parties. honestly, will i enjoy myself. (yeah this is my dumb question of the night) i have like a million more but im realizing how long this list is getting. so, i'll let you guys answer these first. THANK U! U DO NOT KNOW HOW BIG A FAVOR U GUYS ARE DOING ME!

I mean, once accepted, do you go through the same orientation as freshmen or are u treated as if ur a returning student. Transfer students have typically the same requirements as incoming freshmen: Admissions for Transfer Students - Howard University. Also, they go through the same orientation as freshmen and arrive on campus at the same time to allow enough time to adjust and become familiar with the campus. You aren't treated as a returning student because, well, you aren't one lol. 2. anybody an advertising major? im coming to Howard specifically for the School of Communications cuz i heard it was one of the best. well, the best ppl do the best things so i mean its only right i go, lol. lemme stop I was not an advertising major but I did graduate from the School of Communications and it is good. The School of C requires all students to complete a supervised internship and The School of C has its own job fair for juniors looking for internships and seniors who are looking for jobs. 3. what goes down at the open houses? im coming to the one in september. would i be able to follow students n stuff like that? also, are there any events where prospective students can stay on campus with a student for a night like a shadow day.i know my skool does that During the Open House you will have a tour guide who will show you around campus and give Howard history in the process. The tour guide is usually a student known as a Student Ambassador. A university official will meet you and give financial aid, tuition and other information. At that time you can ask any questions you may have of the admissions process or requirements. As far as spending the night on campus, alot of State clubs (Georgia Club, Michigan Club, etc.) host students and pair them with an undergraduate student. I suggest you talk to someone in the Howard University Chicago or Illinois Alumni Association for more details. 4. anybody know which dorms transfer students are typically assigned to? Transfer students are assigned to all dorms except Drew Hall and the Quad. Those dorms are strictly for freshmen. Transfers usually go to Cook, Meridian and the West Towers. 5. whats the poetry scene like? imma slam poet and i just gotta know whether or not there's spots on and off campus where i can go to spit Poetry is CRAZY at Howard. There is a group called Poutre and all they do is spoken word. They are VERY good. 6. im told the theater department is hot too. i've been doing drama since my freshman year in highschool as well as working with this place called gallery 37 where I got paid to do it. if any of u have heard of Second City Theater Improv, i've worked for them too. so, i know for a fact i have to be in the drama club(s) on campus cuz its not even an option not to. are there like auditions n stuff. I'm not going to lie, Howard students can act, sing and dance so you got some competition lol. I went to one play at Howard and I honestly was AMAZED! I didnt know my peers were so talented. The Theatre department has open casting calls all the time so you can be in the School of C and still participate. 7. Howard is notorious for parties. im going to be honest, i cant dance for sh*t! but i like to go to parties. honestly, will i enjoy myself. (yeah this is my dumb question of the night) All you need to do is come to ONE Howard Homecoming and you will be hooked. i have like a million more but im realizing how long this list is getting. so, i'll let you guys answer these first. THANK U! U DO NOT KNOW HOW BIG A FAVOR U GUYS ARE DOING ME!
I hope I answered all of your questions! Let me know if you have anymore.

Ok so I got more questions 1) Financial aid – how does the school go about distributing financial aid, specifically for those who decide to transfer in? I know some schools, like Howard, have transfer scholarships but I mean you know how they have a million and one scholarships up for grabs by freshmen, do transfers and continuing students get those chances to apply for em too? 2) I don’t know if any of u guys have ever been to Chicago but if so I wanna know if you could compare the are where Howard is to any are in da Chi. If you’ve never been there then can you just explain the area in general. I’ve been hearin mixed reviews 3) How heavy is greek life on-campus? (im not going to go beyond asking that cuz I’ve searched some stuff on these forums and well lets just say we’re all being watched, lol) 4) Whats the cafeteria food like? What about food off-campus? Any good restaurants? 5) I have looked over the list of sports offered and I just wanna know how the intramurals are, if anyone plays them at all 6) Credit transfers: was it frustrating for anyone who transferred to get credit hours transferred over? I have a situation. See I haven’t taken a math class cuz at this school there was another class that would cover the gene d. however Howard is sayin you need an English and math credit. If I were to take a math class over the summer of 08 do you think that would affect my chances of getting in if im applying in like December? 7) Off and on campus work: anybody work off-campus? If so, how does that work out for ya? 8) Wise to have a car? 9) Spring break: do any clubs or orgs sponsor trips n whatnot for ppl who can’t afford to/ live too far away to go home for breaks 10) Silly question but out of curiosity, are there ANY white folks at Howard? Im just seriously curious. Thanks!

I'll answer what I can.... I don’t know if any of u guys have ever been to Chicago but if so I wanna know if you could compare the are where Howard is to any are in da Chi. If you’ve never been there then can you just explain the area in general. I’ve been hearin mixed reviews There are a LOT of people from the Chi at HU, so I mean, its an adjustment, but you can do it... (there will be a couple of reunions and picnics over the summer by people who went to Morgan Park, Whitney Young, Oak Park, Kenwood... etc... get up with them... How heavy is greek life on-campus? (im not going to go beyond asking that cuz I’ve searched some stuff on these forums and well lets just say we’re all being watched, lol) well.... its a big thing... But of course, thats just my opinion. DO CORRECT research... by interacting with people, and doing a LOT of reading... if you sit back and watch just a little bit, you can figure out everything you need to know... Wise to have a car? There's no place to park, really... but i mean.. if you can pay for the tickets... Silly question but out of curiosity, are there ANY white folks at Howard? Im just seriously curious. yeah... there are a nice handfull... and e'rybody pretty much knows who they are... LOL...

Hi Everybody, this is my first post on the forum, I'm an incoming freshman and I have alot of questions in regards to Howard, but I'll keep the post short because I know my questions have probably been answered already, I'll start with these: (1) What's fall orientation like? (2) How do you go about registering for classes on campus, is it a long process? I'll be in Drew Hall, (3)what's it like living there? and how do you know which room to go to on check in day? I read somewhere that they pass out keys and you choose your own room, is that true?
