I was accepted to my dream school, Fisk University about two weeks ago. I am very excited because I worked very hard to get my a** in this school. Now I need help from my fellow Fiskites to let me know what I should expect from Fisk my freshmen year and the years to come. 8)
P.S. I need all the information that anyone can give me, so if you are a
student of Fisk, don't be afraid to let me anything, because I am one of you all now.
Spread Love 8)
As I thought about answering this, I asked some of my friends for additional input and here's what they said...
DISCRETION IS KEY
Since FISK is small it is very easy for people to know your business. Therefore, choose your relationships wisely and people will only know what you want them to know.
FIRST IMPRESSION IS EVERYTHING
No matter what your peers are doing, make sure you always represent yourself in a positive way (DO YOUR HAIR, don't wear Aunt Jemima scarves on your head because its Saturday or before 10 am) because you only have once chance...
INSURANCE
Prior to leaving home find out which hospitals take your insurance and which specialists as well. Don't wait until you are sick...at that point it could be too late and could cost you some money
Showershoes and caddy are a MUST
Don't tell people which Greek organization you want to be a part of your freshman year. Get to know people from all and then make an informed decision
OBEY CURFEW (12 midnight)
Try not to do anything you can be fined for: driving on the grass, missing curfew, sneaking a boy in, letting someone on your floor in after curfew, etc. If you get locked out, there's always someone you can stay with in another dorm. Go to New Livingstone Hall for the **** call, BUT DON'T BE SEEN.
Don't limit yourself by only befriending people from your state/area
Be open to new things, go places and meet new people
Do all the rebellious things you want to do (piercings, etc) because after you graduate those days are gone
Date one person you never thought you would and one person you never thought you could (fine as hell, ball player, upperclassman)
Have at least 3 memorable experience in Centennial Park
READ "Souls of Black Folk" and understand it
Take advantage of what Nashville has to offer: parks, plays, football games, concerts, etc.
GET YOUR WHITE DRESS for convocation; check out item #63863C in the Summer 2004 JCREW catalog for an appropriate example
Hope this gives you future FISK ladies something to work with and future FISK gentlemen a guide to live by
Endless Treasure, next fall I will reveal myself to you but not before then :-). In the meantime, continue to represent FISK with class and style. I've seen you on campus and we've even had a conversation or two, but my mystery on here allows me to be completely objective...
That's not fair!! I would like to know who you are. You're objectiveness is sooo on point though; I agree with everything that you've said thus far....preach on my Mystery FISKite...but tell me who you are!!! The fact that I've talked to you makes it all the spookier (sp?? ). Thank you for the complements as well.
The actual statement is this: "You don't choose FISK, FISK chooses you." Its meaning is rooted in the fact that many current students had never heard of FISK or didn't have FISK high on their priority list BEFORE visiting the campus. Once on the campus, they feel that something was calling them to be here almost in an intuitive sense. We believe that education is about more than bricks and mortar and FISK opened our mind up to that while we were here on a visit. In other words, FISK was "calling/choosing" us...
Some also say that they were "led" to FISK despite whatever they thought their college goal was. We use it to try and explain why we like it here (those of us who do) and that it is okay if you don't feel it when you visit (like ASUgirl didn't). Many of us believe that FISK (and other HBCUs) are hollowed ground because of all the prominent African-Americans that paved the way for us.
Keith Chandler works at and graduated from FISK. I hang out in the Office of Admission a lot. I'm thinking about getting him to look at this site, but I dunno :-). He's very "old school" and might be upset at the negative stuff that's said about HBCUs and their students.
That's interesting....REAL DEEP! Well, you doing an excellent job reppin' your school but if you want to show the website to Keith Chandler, it should be quite interesting. Keith Chandler, I saw him before....he's real deep but I love it!
Thanks for the compliment! I just feel like not enough people know about FISK. It's a great school, although NOWHERE NEAR PERFECT but then what school is. Also, I just want incoming students to know the deal before they get here and get corrupted within our little microcosm of the "real world".
There are like three salons right on Jefferson Street (which is right behind FISK)...but I suggest you getting to know some girls on campus that will braid your hair just as well (if not better) and cheaper! The class of 2007 has some GREAT braiders.
Thanks for responding! Would you happen to know the name of the salons/stylist? I will be wearing my hair in braids, however, there are going to be times that I need a break from the braids and I need a good stylist/salon who knows something about hair care.
Are you taking classes this summer?
