Food for thought:
SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 28, 2005) -- A season-ending matchup between two teams with a combined 5-25 record does not normally generate much interest. It does when the draft rights to one of most electrifying players in college football history might be at stake.
The Houston Texans can secure the No. 1 overall pick -- presumably for Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush if he leaves school -- with a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the first meeting between these teams.
Should Houston win a game some have tagged the "Bush Bowl," they could ultimately lose.
Under that scenario, the Texans and Niners both would finish 3-13. If the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers and New York Jets also lose their season finales, that would leave five teams with 3-13 records, further complicating matters.
The tiebreaker for determining which team gets the top pick would then fall to strength of schedule, where the 2005 records of the opposing teams would be totaled. That means the ****-displaced Saints would be awarded the first pick followed by the Packers, Jets, Texans and Niners.
However, all of the Week 17 games must be completed before final of strength of schedule standings can be determined. (from nfl.com)
So what do you all think? Should both teams try to throw the game so they can get a higher draft pick? We know its not the moral thing to do, but we're talking about the chance to draft a guy who could turn your franchise completely around. Does greed win out over morality in this case? What would you all do?
The field goal unit comes out to make the game winning 24 yard field goal. It's basically a chip shot. Kris Brown kicks...... ooooo, and it's wide left. The Texans lose the game! The Texans lose the game! *David Carr and Kris Brown bump chests*
I heard them say on ESPN that they should switch it up and allow the winner of the game to get the 1 pick. It would be interesting to see the Saints with the first pick though because they would surely get Leinart considering their situation at QB and already having a franchise back in Deuce. So for the sake of entertainment and even more suspense, I look for the niners to lose the game.
But if they awarded the winner of the game with the No. 1 pick, that wouldn't be fair to the other 3-13 teams, the Jets, the Packers, and the Saints because they all have a shot at the No. 1 pick if the Texans win. It should definitely be interesting though. Probably for the first time ever, I actually want to see the Texans play and wish the game would be on TV.
You bring up an interesting point about if the Saints were to get the No. 1 pick. They could either draft Leinart, or if they are really sold on Reggie Bush they could draft him and trade Deuce McAllister for a big time playmaker at another position. Or, they could trade down to the No. 2 spot and pick Leinart at No. 2 and get extra picks or players to go along with it. Really, I think that the 49ers and Jets need Bush the most out of the 5 teams. Curtis Martin will be retiring soon, and Kevan Barlow hasn't done anything since Garrison Hearst left. Not to mention, Alex Smith and Reggie Bush were high school teammates, and Reggie Bush would really be a fan favorite playing in his home state. Having Reggie Bush in the backfield would really take alot of pressure off of Alex Smith and keep opposing defenses honest since they have to account for a player who can take it to the house every time he touches it. That would make it easier for him to get the ball to Brandon Lloyd and the other receivers and actually throw some TDs (Alex Smith has 0 TDs this year). The other three teams, the Texans, Packers, and Saints, all have pretty good running backs already and don't need him as much as the 49ers and Jets do. Still though, being that he is so highly sought after, they could still draft him and trade him for picks/players, or trade down and get the player they really want/need and get extra picks/players.
One thing that does concern me about Reggie is all the hype surrounding him. He's a spectacular player, one of the best RBs ever at the collegiate level (I still say Barry Sanders was the best ever), but it's no secret how many players come out of college with super high expectations and not live up to them. See Ryan Leaf, Ron Dayne, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, the list goes on forever. I just hope he stays focused and committed to being the best he can be, rather than let all the hype get to him and convince himself that he doesn't need to work hard.
What's yalls Wildcard picks?
-In the AFC I'll take the Pats over the Jags. The Jaguars haven't really shown much dominance and that isn't good considering they're goin into a foxborough against an experience defending champion Patriots.
-I got the Steelers over the Bengals. I look for the Bus and Willie Parker to give it to the Bengals defense. They still aren't tough enough on that side.
In the NFC I'll take the Bucs. The Skins are too banged up to go into Tampa and take it.
The Panthers vs. the Giants looks to be the best matchup to me. This games rides on the running game for the Panthers and the depleted LB core of the Giants. But on the other hand is Tiki Barber has another big game this just may be an exception. I'll take the Giants over the Panthers because of the home edge, the amount of a consistent balance, and the inconsistency of the Panthers dominance on the defensive side of the ball.
ahum... Go Bears...
fukk that..im bitter cuz we aint even make the playoffs........hell we didnt even make 3rd place
and i thought u was from nyc.....root for the giants they made it too...lol
