Hi Everybody, this is my first post on the forum, I'm an incoming freshman and I have alot of questions in regards to Howard, but I'll keep the post short because I know my questions have probably been answered already, I'll start with these:
(1) What's fall orientation like?
(2) How do you go about registering for classes on campus, is it a long process?
I'll be in Drew Hall, (3)what's it like living there? and how do you know which room to go to on check in day? I read somewhere that they pass out keys and you choose your own room, is that true?
What up! I see the Howard male population keeps growing!
Fall Orientation is great. There are events all week such as the Ice Cream Social, Luau in the Valley, Variety Show and Mr. and Miss Freshmen Pagent. All of these events are mostly put on by the Campus Pals.
You register for classes during orientation week via the Internet. You will receive a log-in and a Pin for the Bison Web.
Living in Drew Hall is crazy! I found out my room number and room mate the day I got there. It is NOT a free-for-all; the Drew Hall staff assigns a room to you.
Ok so I got more questions1) Financial aid – how does the school go about distributing financial aid, specifically for those who decide to transfer in? I know some schools, like Howard, have transfer scholarships but I mean you know how they have a million and one scholarships up for grabs by freshmen, do transfers and continuing students get those chances to apply for em too?2) I don’t know if any of u guys have ever been to Chicago but if so I wanna know if you could compare the are where Howard is to any are in da Chi. If you’ve never been there then can you just explain the area in general. I’ve been hearin mixed reviews3) How heavy is greek life on-campus? (im not going to go beyond asking that cuz I’ve searched some stuff on these forums and well lets just say we’re all being watched, lol)4) Whats the cafeteria food like? What about food off-campus? Any good restaurants?5) I have looked over the list of sports offered and I just wanna know how the intramurals are, if anyone plays them at all6) Credit transfers: was it frustrating for anyone who transferred to get credit hours transferred over? I have a situation. See I haven’t taken a math class cuz at this school there was another class that would cover the gene d. however Howard is sayin you need an English and math credit. If I were to take a math class over the summer of 08 do you think that would affect my chances of getting in if im applying in like December? 7) Off and on campus work: anybody work off-campus? If so, how does that work out for ya?8) Wise to have a car?9) Spring break: do any clubs or orgs sponsor trips n whatnot for ppl who can’t afford to/ live too far away to go home for breaks10) Silly question but out of curiosity, are there ANY white folks at Howard? Im just seriously curious. Thanks!
Financial aid is going to be distributed based on need and your GPA.
Chicago has nice parts and bad parts; DC has nice parts and bad parts. Howard is located in an area that is a mix of the two. Up past Drew and around by Slowe are not so good areas but around from the Towers on U Street is very nice. Basically, it aint as bad as what folks make it out to be.
As far as greek life, what do you mean by "heavy"? Are the greeks out and about on campus? Yes. Do thousands of people go to the Step Show every year? Yes. Does everyone on campus want to be greek? Hell no.
The Cafe is ok...it makes me sick. I eat at the Restaurant and the Punch Out ONLY! There are very nice restaurants in Chinatown, Georgetown and Frienship Heights, up Wisconsin Avenue.
Yes, folks play intramurals. I think the men's basketball team was State Champs or something like that this past year.
If I were you i would just wait until you got to Howard to start taking requirements. Alot of transfer students lose credits...ALOT!
I had two jobs off campus...both at Pentagon City Mall. It's very convenient and is right on the subway line. It's do-able...I worked a few nights a week but mostly on weekends.
A car is not needed, but its good to have. The subway and bus go everywhere that you will need to go (grocery store, mall, out to eat). And if you dont like the bus you can always take a taxi.
As far as Spring Break you are pretty much on your own. If you dont go home, cool but aint nobody paying for you to go on a trip lol.
There are white folks in grad school. Alot in the school of Medicine and School of Dentistry...not too many in undergrad from what I've seen. I only remember 2 white people.

lol i didnt mean like were they going to pay for us. i just know some skools have things like Habitat for Humanity and on spring breaks they typically go to help build homes in different places. hahah **** i wish a skool would pay for me to spend spring break in cancun! but thanx for the response, appreciate it
o yeah, i cant agree wit u more on the response to the whole area thing. i know a lot of good highschools in Chicago that are practically in the ghetto. like Walter Payton was literally right across the way from Cabrini Green housing projects and University of Chicago is like blocks away from 63rd n cottage where those project homes are. so yeah i can understand wit everyone being all "its in the ghetto" n whatnot. but i think so long as u dont look like a target then u can make it and thats just anywhere. i was just curious, not to mention im kinda intimidating for a female anyways so i typically dont get ****ed wit. thanx

Howard did have an Alternative Spring Break for HU students who wanted to go to New Orleans and help **** Katrina victims rebuild homes. It was quite nice...
Kind of off the topic at hand, but I'm going to be taking the ACT for the first time in a month or two. Just wondering if Howard recommends or needs the optional essay portion of the ACT. I was reading over the packet I received and it said that some schools don't recommend that students bother with the essay part of the ACT. Since there is an additional fee for this part, I just thought I'd ask for whoever knows.
I took the ACT, and I didn't take the essay portion. I dont think that much has changed since I took it, so I dont think you had to take it, however, dont quote me on that
urgent answer b4 da 27 lol im doing dual enrollment college & highschool at the same time im just wondering does howard take them for face value or do they just bump it down to an elective? let me no so i dont load myself up on courses gracias
