Accepted To Fisk Univ! What should I Expect? Posted on 03-02-2004
In Rod We Trust

I was accepted to my dream school, Fisk University about two weeks ago. I am very excited because I worked very hard to get my a** in this school. Now I need help from my fellow Fiskites to let me know what I should expect from Fisk my freshmen year and the years to come. 8) P.S. I need all the information that anyone can give me, so if you are a student of Fisk, don't be afraid to let me anything, because I am one of you all now. Spread Love 8)

I don't personally know the name of the stylists that are on Jefferson Street, but the best salon of them all is called Panache; my roommate got her hair done there during first semester and it looked good. I was going to take before and after pictures just in case the stylist screwed her hair up. But when you get on campus, I PROMISE YOU, it's way better to buy a perm at Kim's (a hair shop down Jefferson) or Sally's and ask a TRUSTED friend to apply it for you. You should really get your ends trimmed at a salon though...I don't trust too many people with scissors near my head. Yes, indeed I am taking summer classes. I'm actually back at FISK for a summer medical education program. It's an alliance between FISK and Vanderbilt. We have classes 3 days a week and clinical experiences at Vandy 2 days a week. I have to be out of the dorm everyday by at least 7AM to make it on time to class. IT'S CRAZY. I'm having a lot of fun though. Any more questions...feel free to ask. I'll try to check on here more regularly.

Thanks for info "Endless Treasure" I would think that people would want to get there hair perm a salon vs a campus room... I was thinking about doing that 3-2 program at Vanderbilt myself. My major is Business Admin. Which tuition rate do you pay...FISK or Vanderbilts? Also, what can we have in our dorm rooms (as far as applicances go)?

Hey everyone! I am new to this board and its great to see prospective and current Fisk students here! I am a late 80's grad and am now working in public health. More importantly, I am here to answer any questions you guys might have about my time at Fisk and the school in general. To Sweetea, when you do the 3-2 Fisk/Vandy MBA program you pay Fisk's tuition for the FISK years and Vandy's tuition for the Vandy years. Don't sweat it, though...Vandy will compensate you well IF you do well at Fisk and make your connections :-). I have a frat brother who is in the 3-2 engineering program and he is taken care of...

Sweetea: FISK allows refrigerators as far as appliances. You aren't supposed to have microwaves in your room, but my roommate and I had one last semester in Jubilee. They really didn't do roomchecks so we got away with it. I personally don't believe that you need a microwave...it just generates more traffic in your room. I should know. A refrigerator is ABSOLUTELY essential in my eyes. I don't know I how I lived for the last few days of school while it was defrosting. Ummm...a lot of people had George Formans, toasters, etc...thats allowed too. George Formans are good to make grilled cheese and hot dogs on.

Sweetea: Boy, are your questions interesting :-)! The University does not keep data on its pregnancy rate. There are some non-traditional students at Fisk that have children, but I don't think its something that characterizes the school or the student body. Insofar as I know, there are not any opnely HIV+ students on campus. If you are really interested in HIV/Pregnancy data for Nashville area campuses, you should contact the Metropolitan Nashville Health Department. I was a Health Educator for a few years so I'm curious as to why behavior-related statistics are important to you? How does that affect/impact your educational opportunities? Crime statistics for Fisk are available at the website securityoncampus.org. The statistics cover up to 2002 (the most recent year cumulative data is available). Fisk does have campus security and it also utlilizes uniformed Nashville police officers. Last year, security lighting was installed on campus and later this summer (by the time you arrive) there will be more installed and some call-boxes. A few buildings will have cameras as well. I hope this answers some of your questions...

I just finished my first year at FISK an I have to say that it was a true experience. For the incomming freshmen, please don't let other people bring you down for doing what is best for you. This is the time to enjoy yourself while earning your degree. Take advantage of everything the college experience has to offer, on campus and off campus. Please, make sure you only let positive people into your life that will encourage you and help you grow into a better person. Hope to see you this fall on the yard. FISK UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
