The lack of black people obtaining doctoral degrees is a serious problem among and within the our community. Why are so few of us getting doctoral degrees? Are we scared? Do we lack the intellect...(I don't think so)....so what's up?! :? :?
Your right ...who are the people on the website? COLLEGE STUDENTS!!!! thats all fine and dandy but there are more people in jail and on the corner than in college
white man says: keep the black man out of college...and he will find the jailhouse or the corner.
white man says: keep the black man out of college...and he will find the jailhouse or the corner.
just curious.....why you always say something like that at the end of every post?? you know whiteman says:......etc.
thats aiight tho.....that's your thing, your handle. But if you don't mind me asking, what the inspiration behind it?? Did you read that somewhere or something?
anyways, uhm back to the topic of this post. I think doctoral degrees are important, especially in the economy of today. White people are staying in college longer......mainly because of a fear to enter the real world. Of course, they just sit and spend money like that. I plan on receiving my Ph.D because in Psychology, it is better to get a doctorate degree. Plus in most fields, have a doctorate degree means more money, and more opportunity to pay off loans. I guess education isn't one of the fields....
But aside from money, having a doctoral degree represents prestige. I want to feel and I want others to respect me, and I am sure having a Ph.D behind my name will a help out a tad bit.
I'll probably get my Masters and chill for a little while...establish a family and see if I really need the doctorate.
I feel you...cause I dont like school anyway....so Im really trying to relax with the schooling part once I have graduated from graduate school. And like you said...after working for so many years and having my family, etc...I may decide to go back for my doctorate in Political Science.
I guess one of my 'true dreams' is to get a Ph.D in sociology or psychology and teach on the college level...why I say 'true dream' is because that's what I truly want to do, but I have other career choices in mind in case...
And I think the reason many blacks don't go for the Ph.D is like you said, it doesn't provide a significant income hike. You can go for an MBA or a master's in some of these engineering or computer fields and make way more than a Ph.D would. The majority of those obtaining Ph.Ds do so for teaching college...and how many black college professors do you see (compared to white ones)? Hm.
Besides, the Ph.D is three to six years of intensive study, reading, and writing...some people just aren't up to the scholarly work that is required.
But the money isn't the problem. Doctoral programs have some of the very best financial aid of any program period. Most offer graduate teaching assistantships or research opportunities, and fellowships to help pay. For example, check out Yale's doctoral page. The fellowships they offer for Ph.D candidates is amazing.
