Sooo...I've noticed a growing and DISTURBING(at least for me) trend at my school....More and more whites, asians and other non blacks are signing up for HBCUs...Well...to put it mildly...it shocked the sh!t outta me and personally I DETEST the idea of whites at an HBCU...I just think it defeats the whole purpose....
My friends think I'm rascist...AND maybe I am.... but anyways how do ya'll feel about asians and whites invading HBCUs?
For those who are at an hbcu now, are you startin to see a more diverse campus? Does it bother you?
Is it rascist to want HBCUs to remain black?
While we are on this topic...
I go to a predominately white, all girls, catholic school... Fortunately for the class of 2008 we have 15 blacks out of 200+...
But anyway...They have a lot of girls that do music videos in their multi media classes. Now the infatuation seems to be on rap & hip-hop. Well when they film their music videos, they usually have a bunch of crazy white girls doing dances to various hip-hop songs...Point it is..Recently they have started coming to the black girls to "help" them do the dances and be in their videos...I'm kind of torn on the issue...
I'm not sure if they are genuinely interested in being friendly and such or are they just coming to us to be their "dancing monkeys."
Some girls don't see it as a big deal and some do....
What do yall think?
I would look at the attitude, personality and what kind of crowd they are. If they are alright kind of girls then maybe there's no harm, but snobbish, sneaky girls I would question.
^^^Me too...if they genuinely want to learn the dances, fine...I had a friend who attended a PWI, so her roommate freshman year was a NAIVE white girl from the suburbs...my friend was a black girl from the inner city...and her roommate was on the phone with her friends probably the second month in the school year and was telling all her friends that her roommate was going to teach her all the "black dances"...it was comical yet sad...she was acting like she was going to be an expert or something...that would have offended me, and it definitely offended my friend!
Although I don't attend an all Black college, it wouldn't bother me to see non-black persons enrolled in one. To hear my fellow Black peoples say that they would rather not have Whites, Aisians, and other non-Blacks attend an all Black college is not being fair. It wasn't too long ago that our Black people were being looked down on by the Whites. Now, it sounds like the same activity is occuring, just in reverse.
It's not like they (the non-Blacks) can't or couldn't get into another school of their choice (i.e. "White colleges"), but instead, they wanted to go to a predominantly Black Institution. I guess they like us and enjoy being around us. Why not make them feel welcome?
To me that's like saying...
Men should be allowed in women institutions or vice versa...
There is a reason why the safe haven was created...and diluting it with other races takes away from that purpose
HBCU is HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES and UNIVERSITIES...just that...HISTORICALLY...
If you look at a few of the hbcus like Bluefield State and West Virginia State (I think thats the school) along with schools like Kentucky State and others...they're not even MAJORITY black anymore! Those schools aren't diluted, they've been transformed!!!! I agree, there should be a safe haven for blacks, but at the same time, should you say others can't come there? NO...like someone else pointed out...it was the reverse for blacks not too long ago, that we werent allowed to attend PWIs...they could argue the same thing that you're arguing and say that their schools are historically white and that to admit other races would take away from their safe haven...I'm not trying to play devil's advocate, I see what you're saying, but I think it would actually enrich the HBCU experience if they came...I don't think it would take away from it...now, if there's too many of them to the point that they're ignorant, don't know the history of HBCUs, and come to think they're running things? Then you have a problem...but I think that alot could be learned if people of other races come to appreciate HBCUs and their uniqueness! I think it's flattering...I wonder why other races attend HBCUs, but I think its impressive...I think blacks sometimes get too possessive, rightfully so at times, but other times, they should just loosen up a little bit.
Education is universal. I go to Georgia State University one of the most diverse schools in the country. Blacks, whites, Jews, Asians, Muslims, Copts, Turks, Arabs, you name it we got it. And we get along pretty well.
