Transferring to Howard in the fall! Which courses are required for all Howard students? Or is it split by schools? I'm trying to determine if most of my credits will transfer or not. Is foreign language a requirement for every major? (I'm Radio/TV/Film ) Will they accept courses that are similar, but not the exact same course? ex. I see that African History to 1877 is a course at Howard, but I'm taking African History to 1865.

Well this question is for me in particular, I'm planning on majoring in Biology and I was informed that all biology majors are required to minor in chemistry lol, not my favorite subject but I'll have to suck it up. There is also a foreign language which is required and I am interested in pursuing French. I wanted to know if it was best to stick with a foreign language like Spanish, which I've already got some knowledge on, or to venture out and take French. I'm pretty sure Spanish would be of more use to me if I were in any medical setting, but I'm extremely interested in French. Any suggestions???
I had talked to a girl up there and she explained that chemistry is not required but its more of an automatic minor because you have to take so many chem classes for your bio major. I'm pretty sure u can have a separate minor. I feel the same way as u concerning French/Spanish. I assume Spanish is more beneficial for me (going into the medical field) but I really love French. I'm just going to minor in French just because and maybe take a few classes in Spanish just so I can be literate. My main question is how does this accelerated BS/MD program work? I've been tryna get insight from someone already in the program but cant seem to find anybody, so I guess I'll have to call the school and hopefully get some answers.

When's Pre Orientation? How much does it cost? What do you do? It is worth the price? Does Howard offer many or any grants to incoming freshamn? If you dont have a scholoarship is your financial package gonna be outragously expensive?

Okay, this is tricky....Is Chemistry a REQUIRED minor for Bio majors? Yes and No. Chemistry naturally becomes your minor due to the fact that you are required to take a year of general chem and a year of organic chem with the corresponding labs. As far as your foreign language, take Spanish! Spanish speaking people are HIGHLY needed. Knowing French is good, but being fluent in Spanish is great. Trust me.

Howard is VERY iffy when it comes to accepting transfer credit. I have known people who were juniors at their other schools, come and transfer as freshmen to Howard. They had to basically start all over again. The requirements are broken down by schools. For example, Arts and Sciences requires all students to take swimming, The School of Communications requires all students to take Intro to Mass Comm, etc. I strongly believe that foreign language is required all across the board for every major.

The accelerated BS/MD program requires that you finish undergrad in 2 years, then you must go on to Howard School of Medicine (I think that is another 3 or 4 years). You are still required to take the MCAT and your 2 years of undergrad are VERY intense. Summer school is required throughout undergrad to ensure you graduate within the two-year time frame. I'm sure you can do it! You have to be very focused, though...

I spoke with an advisor, and she had me name the classes I've taken. Most of the classes she said Howard would accept, but I don't believe her. I've been in school for 3 years, I DO NOT want to start all over. What's the best way to find out if they will REALLY take these courses...other than to pay $300 to find out I will be a freshman if I come to Howard. I WILL NOT START ALL OVER...

Damn, Phylicia...six questions all at once?? No problem, I got cha... Howard University 101--The New Student Orientation Program is the official Howard orientation for first time undergraduate students (Freshman and Transfers). The official program has no fee or cost and takes place in August, one week before classes officially begin in the fall. The Center for Academic Reinforcement offers an optional program during the summer for new students at a cost of $325 per person for those that feel the need for extra assistance in preparing to attend college. Please note, however, that all new students will still be required to attend all sessions of the official program. During Pre-O all new students take placement exams, receive their academic advisor and get info on their intended majors and school. I didnt go to the Summer Pre-O when I was a freshmen, but for $325 I would have more than likely stayed my **** at home... I'm not sure abou the number of grants offered to Howard students. But If you dont have a scholarship, there are other options. Such as loans, grants, etc. It costs about $20,000 for Howard...if you dont have a scholarship your freshmen year, GET GOOD GRADES AND APPLY FOR UPPERCLASSMEN SCHOLARSHIPS. Howard has LOTS of them so please take advantage!

Well, I commend you for being proactive and speaking with an advisor. But I think the best way to find out is to apply. Once you are accepted, your transcript will be evaluated to determine transferable classes to Howard University. Once the evaluation is completed, the Office of Enrollment Management will apply the credits to your Howard academic record. See if this link can help you out a bit more: Howard University - School of Communications - Freshmen Orientation - Transfer Students

Now I know you know that it is too late to apply to Howard!! I've already been accepted. I'm about to pay this $300 enrollment fee, and I'm sure it is non-refundable, but if I have to start over I will be staying at CAU! I need to speak to someone that will say we will take this or we will not take that. The advisor was simply saying, "it needs to be approved by the chair."
