College Confusion! Posted on 11-19-2008

I'm currently a senior in high school ('09!!!!!). My school is predominantly white and seen as the "rich school" of my area. There are black people at my school but because i take almost all advanced placement courses i rarely see them and because of this have few black friends. both my parents went to tuskegee, so did my grandparents and my brother is currently attending skegee too so hbcus are in my family. im not sure what to do tho cuz i don't kno if i'll fit in at howard or hampton (which i've already applied to) being such a guiet "white girl" that speaks properly, isn't the best dancer, and has both lil wayne and jason mraz on her ipod. am i too "white" for a hbcu? My acadmeics (i have a 4.4 GPA and 33 act and am a national achievement semifinalsit) have brought me attention from schools from Caltech to Duke to Harvard. most people i know don't even kno what a hbcu is and keep pushing this other schools at me because of the name. i don't kno if i'd fit in at one of these schools either tho! now im more confused than ever about what school is right for me. If anyone has any advice on my problems or info on howard or hampton id really appreciate it. plz help!!!!!

Visiting the campuses is so important. You can really discover which school is the best fit for you.

Follow your heart! I turned down a lot of PWIs to attend spelman. I'm so happy I listened to my heart and went to Spelman. Everyone told me to go to the University of Michigan or Emory... :/ I would recommend visiting your top choices. Make sure you find a school where you feel socially and academically welcomed...Congrats on those scores! I'm sure you'll become a national achievement scholar. I was one last year...Just to give you a heads up, if you apply to Howard, you'll definitely receive their Laureate scholarship (full tuition, room and board, and a book voucher). I have faith you'll pick the right school for you! Have a great senior year!

It's really great to hear from all of you especially yall who went through or, like Orca51, are still going through what I'm dealin with. I just got my acceptance letter from Howard today and i'm accepted to Hampton too so I'm really excited! I'm still applying to harvard, stanford and some other schools and I'm supposed to be visiting Howard some time next month so that'll help me see how it is but its really good to know I'm not alone in this! Thanks so much!

Ok, now my thing is question is kinda related. I"m 18 years old. I got accepted to the United States Naval Academy when I was 16 years old. Was 17 my first day there and was the second to youngest student. I never felt so out of place at being there. I come from a pretty low-income background and a decent public school education, but while I was there I was surrounded by mostly white, wealthy students. I mean, cmon...I even saw John McCain"s son walking around in the hallways. While I was there I got involved with the Gospel Choir, then the Triad Christian Fellowship, (Triad = Members of the Choir, NSBE, and MBSC) and also the Midshipman Black Studies Club. The majority of my family at USNA were African American and a lot of them were from Atlanta. The only thing that made me different from them was that I"m not black. I"m Mexican American. When I made the choice to leave USNA I decided to come back to a community college to save some money. I heard so much about HBCUs while I was with my friends and just felt drawn to them. My top transfer choice right now is Clark Atlanta. I plan on majoring in Sociology with a Pre-Law emphasis. The thing is, I was wondering how students at HBCUs see other minorities attending the campus. Especially the females. I"ve been charged that the only reason I want to attend a HBCU is to steal the men. I just want to know what the honest opinion is of these colleges. Any help would be awesome. Thank you.

This is true. HBCUs were created to provide educational opportunities for everyone. Hope you can attend the Black College Expo: Los Angeles (January 10th) or Oakland (January 24th) - The College Expo - Home. If you attend the L.A. event, we may meet. I'll be dividing my time between the tables for Tuskegee U. and CAU. I graduated from both schools. Best of luck.

I'll def try to attend the LA one. Hopefully I can get my parents to come also since they have doubts about me attending a HBCU. But I would definitely like to talk and get more information.

I'm not going to lie to you and say you won't face any prejudice. Some people in the AUC (cau, morehouse, and spelman) are ignorant. Let the haters hate. Follow your heart, and go to CAU! There are people from all backgrounds here.
