what's_on_my_mind

Kanye West....Out Kast.... Twister...and some more figures are talented right now..... We see them produce and make music that makes you heart pulse go high and make you groove to the motion within your head... However...I was thinking...we don't have many artist nowdays that are similar to our parents generation... When I mean that....In my parents day and time....artist like Temptations....Isley Brothers....Supremes....Whispers....and other legends... not only sung...but where able to pla music instruments and song at the same time... They were more than a music group...they were a band... Nowdays... the only thing we have close to that is Alica Keys.... You don't see B2K, TLC, Destiny Child, and others being a band and artist... You see the music and a few dance moves that make you go yeah!!! But we don't have no music with a band that is clever and creative like our parents day and time... This **** a little for me.... What do you all think about this???

There is no reason behind that. It just can't compare. These are, in fact, different times. You have to consider all the events that transpired back in the 60s and 70s. You had wars in Vietnam and Korea and still in the United States African American people were being oppressed and things were still a long way from being equal. A majority of the music created was influenced heavily by events such as these. That's why I feel that older music is much better. It had depth and quality. Artists back then had to put that "good stuff" out because of hatred and criticism. It was a struggle and this music could be used to send positive messages throughout all of this turmoil. Basically, they didn't want to be outdone in any way.

Times have changed and so has music..and my parents tend to buy the same music I buy...My point is that you have parents who go to concerts were acts tend to be big during their time, for example Earth-Wind-and-Fire, O'Jays, acts that be on that Sinbad show.. (Well for my parents it more like LL, Tina Marie, G. Levert, New Edition, Luther..lol) When it comes time to be their age we will be going to concerts to see Mary J., A Keys, Beyonce,Boys II Men, Jill Scott, Luda, Jay, Usher, Missy...

I was discussing this a while ago with some friends. Yes, we have some pretty impressive artists, but we don't have any artist that can compete to the ones in our parents' generation. You have to remember, most of the artist from the past had real talent, but these artist today our living off technology. Now, I am not saying that some can't represent our time, but many of these people will soon be forgotten, or we will look back, and be like "why did we listen to those fools?" Some artist that I think positively represent our time, (actions and talents) are R & B  Alicia Keys  India Arie  Jill Scott  Boyz to Men Rappers  Jay Z  Mos Def  Outkast  Kanye West  Missy Elliot (unique & original) *Just put R&B and rappers because this is what most people of color listen to.*

^Just to add to your list *Erykah Badu *Brian McKnight These two I feel are very talented and could easily hang.

Yeah it's very true...ANYBODY can make a beat on a keyboard, but ask them to actually play sumthin and they look at you crazy...But for some reson what I miss tha most is tha HORN LINES musicians had, next time you get tha chance go back through your parent stuff and find some EARTH,WIND,AND FIRE in just listen to them horns!!! Thats why it's tha year 2004 and you have Black College Bands still playin "in tha stone" and "shining star" ect... My opinion, tha musician I that era where 10X more inclined with there music than present day musicians (hands down)
