I know what you will be... Posted on 07-03-2004

Have you ever had people try to guess what Frat or Sorority best fit you by just looking at you and your personality?...does this really have any real significance? Does each Greek org carry a general look, personality, or attitude that they look for?

Before I start my reply, I must say that I love your pictures babyfaced1908. Anyways, I told someone which sorority I wanted to join and they said yeah you look and act like you could be a XYZ. Even one of the members of XYZ said the same thing, which encouraged me to continue to strive for the better things life. It is amazing that some of the same old sterotypes are still around although they have clearly been crushed by members of a partcular BGLO. For example, AKAs are sterotyped as being light skinned, long haired, stuck up women. A lot of the ones I have met are medium to dark skinned women with different hair lengths. Most importantly, they are NOT stuck up, they are very down-to-earth. Then, the Deltas are sterotyped as being rough. Once again, a lot of the Deltas that I have met have been very sophisticated, gentle women. I don't know that much about the Zetas and SGRhos, but I am sure that they too disprove any stereotypes about themselves...most of them anyway. Well, that is my little spill 8)

Thats an interesting question...being a non greek and telling someone that I am inbterested in pledging in the future people will say you look and fit the personality of XYZ. I dont know if this has any significance, but as a non greek I have experienced that.
Took the words out of mouth.

Wow, it's funny that this topic is here. I was just corresponding via email with a soror that I went to High School with, and she said that she always thought that I was interested in Zeta, because my best friend is a Zeta. She also told me that when she told a bruh who went to high school with us and a nother classmate that I was her soror, they both had different opinions. The bru said that he had me pegged fr AKA, and the other classmate said that he always thought that I was smart enough to be a Delta, but that I would rather be an SGRho due to the big fish-little pond theory. I got a kick out of those analyses of me.

Whether we like to admit it or not, many of those stereotypes about our organizations are true. I've been pegged as an Alpha or a Kappa from day one, and I fell right in line. The old adage is "Great minds think along the same lines" and thus I aligned myself with people of like mind and purpose. Alphas are generally: brainy, elitist, arrogant, yet very organized, with a strong sense of history and community. I don't see that as a bad thing.

Exactly .. I mean what we fail to realize is that stereotypes DO NOT derive out of the clear blue air .. Even though the stereotype may not fit every single person it does fit the majority. And even though it has nothing to do with the sorority as a whole .. Alot of people join sororities that fit them (stereotype wise) .. Thus proving the stereotypes right and making them alot more prevelant. But then again their is always an exception to every rule and all do not apply but its the majority that makes the stereotype and statistic .. Stereotypes Ive heard good and bad Akas - Pretty .. Light Skin .. Long Hair .. Conceited .. Stuck Up .. High Maintenence .. Makeup Girls .. Classy .. Hoes Deltas - Cool .. Humble .. Down to Earth .. Fine (Without Effort) .. One of the "boys" that still look like girls .. Smart .. Strong .. Determined .. Outspoken .. Outgoing .. "Crunk" .. Loud lol .. Best steppers .. Any shade but light skin .. Any length hair Zetas - Wanna be different .. Trendsetters .. Goes against what everyone else is doin .. Fat and Black .. Cool .. Down to earth .. Leaders SgRhos - Sorry but Ive heard not one thing good about them .. Rejects .. SgRho who? .. Nobodys .. Unimportant .. Should be banned from BGLO Alphas - Smart .. Some Nerdy .. Fine .. Business Men .. Want somethin out of life Kappas - Pretty .. Deltas with canes .. Conceited .. Basically Male Akas so refer to their stereotype Ques - Nasty .. Cool .. Freaks .. Big And/Or Fat .. Brown to dark skin .. Hardcore .. Strong .. Muscular Sigmas - I havent really heard them stereotyped too much .. All Ive really heard is they alrite .. Still in the game .. Not as bad as Iotas .. Just like Zetas .. Still in the game but not as bad as Sgrhos (Just what Ive heard no pun intended) Both can still ride with the best of em .. People know their name Iotas - Refer to SgRhos (No pun intended) Now Personally I can say ur campus depends on who runs ur yard .. Cuz I can definitely say that I know people who do and dont fit these stereotypes ..

Most of those are old school stereotypes really. Ive seen AKA's and Deltas in all shades and there are many pretty Zetas out there and SGRho's as well. Ive been categorized as bein something else myself. Since i been here in Maryland and even back to my dad's in georgia, ppl have assumed i was a Deltas and if not that, then AKA, and if not that, then they'll say i know u didnt pledge Zeta and then they'll go on to ask why with a puzzled look on their face. One person even told me i should have pledged DST and i had to give him the puzzled look and ask him why, b/c i look like one. Wouldnt it be better for me to have done something b/c i wanted it and not b/c i look or act like it. With all that said, he felt where i was coming from. One thing about Sigma is that they have no stereotype, they are everything with no limits and restrictions
