The process of getting a DRIVER'S LICENSE... Posted on 08-04-2004
La

Me and Jeremy somehow got into a discussion of driving and getting a license. Somewhere in the conversation we discuss what it took for us t get a license. Then he says in Illinois it is mandatory that all h.s. students take drivers ed in their school cause its a graduation requirement, and they have to have a yellow card, then a permit, then they can get a license...I never heard of a yellow card cause we dont do those here in Connecticut. Anyhow, I didnt realize how DIFFERENT it was in all state's it is to go about learning how to drive and get a license...This is how it works here in my home state... Driver's Ed ( OPTIONAL ) I went tho, and it cost $400. We dont have drivers ed in all high schools in Connecticut, and my high school happened to be a school that didnt have drivers ed...so I went to Sears. Plus that stupid Sears driving book cost $25. Permit testing..It cost $10  When you are under 18 and have had your permit for so many months, then you can make an appointment to take ur drivers test. Making an appointment cost ANOTHER $40...and then when you go to make an appointment..it aint like u can take it nexrt week or sumthin...You have to wait months in advance...Like I made my appointment in a May and couldnt take the test until that following July...I guess cause there are so many people tryin to get licenses their appointments book months ahead. The actual day of the drivers test arrives. If you successfully complete your exam is cost $77 for the license...They claim its this much cause it doesnt expire for 7 years, unlike older license that use to expire in 4 years... So after its all said and done I spent a total of $552 just to eventually get a license. I really coulda did without the drivers ed...Cause not only was that sh*t boring as hell...but my daddy taught me how to drive honestly...Those few lessons I had from the Sears instructors didnt do much. But that is ridiculous after you calculate all the costs...But Im just wondering..how does it work in every state?

^^but you were born after 1985, meaning that you have more criteria to put up with. My GA license process went like this: - Picked up a certificate of attendance from my school - Took the written test for my permit @ age 15. - Waited a year and a day throughout my sophomore year while taking health to get my ADAP card - Brought permit and ADAP card to the bureau, took the road test, and got my license. Shortly after I got my license, I found out the criteria changed up slightly for folks born after 85, but I didn't pay much mind to that because it didn't apply to me. The road test is an f'ing joke. I still couldn't believe I witnessed some girl so nervous she peed in her pants

In TEXAS you can take driver's ed or go to Sears and take their courses. You can gain a learner's permit at 15 or 16, I forget. You can go up to the DMV and get this free yellow driver handbook, study it, take the test and get your liscense when you turn 18.

well here in Georgia, you get the permit at 15, and then you go to your school and get a Certificate of Attendance so you can prove that you're enrolled in whatever school and you attend classes regularly...you have to take an ADAP course (alcohol & drug awareness program) in your freshman health class and pass the ADAP test so you can get the ADAP card...sooo after all of that you have to make an appointment to take the driving test and that takes MONTHS...i scheduled an appointment this past May and I can't take the road test until August 28th  this is pissin me off because my dad taught me to drive when I was 13 and last year I drove all the way down to Daytona so I'm obviously a good driver, but yet I have to wait to get my official license...my dad even snuck me up to the driving range and we ran through the course in his car and I did everything right
Damn....I would have been blown..esp. since I failed my first road test. Well it was on a course...but I would have been mad if I had to wait months.

in Flawda I think it goes like this: Most schools have Driver's Ed and it's free....at least the school i went to was. you take the driving and written test in the class,if you pass you get the papers for your permit..(and that covers the requirements) if you're under 18 you have to wait 1 year before you can get your license...

dang, at those prices it seems it would be cheaper to just drive without a license and pay whatever the fee is when you get caught

IN MICHIGAN AT 14 AND 9 MONTHS U CAN GET UR PERMIT...AFTER TAKING SEGMENT ONE OF DRIVERS EDUCATION...WHICH IS LIKE 1 SUMTHIN DEPENDING ON WHERE U GO...U DRIVE WITH YOUR PERMIT...MEANING A PARENT OR SOME LICENSED ADULT IS SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE CAR WITH YOU.... THEN WITHOUT ANY MOVING VIOLATIONS AT 16...U GO FOR SEGMENT 2 OF DRIVER'S EDUCATION...THAT'S LIKE 50 BUCKS...AND ITS ONLY 3 DAYS...(A TRUE WASTE OF MONEY...I TOOK IT AT MY HIGH SCHOOL...TUES WED AND THURS....AND JUST SAT THERE AND DID MY HOMEWORK...ALLTHEY TALK ABOUT IS COMMON SENSE STUFF) ONCE U GET UR LICENSE AT 16...UR SEGMENT 2...ITS RESTRICTED...U CANT DRIVE BETWEEN 12am AND 5 AM... THEN WHEN U TURN 17 WITHOUT ANY MOVING VIOLATIONS THEY SEND U UR...OPERATORS LICENSE...AND U DONT HAVE ANY MORE RESTRICITONS....

I don't remember...all I know in MD its called the Rookie Driver Program. You have to go to driving school...I know high schools in my county didn't have driver's ed...not sure about other counties...I think it was between $120 or $220 to go. I remember there being some grown **** women in that class. And a cutie that sat behind me 8) I had to keep a learner's permit with no moving violations...then when ur 16 and 1 month you can go get ur drivers license. Insurance is cheaper when you go to driving school. Driving in general is expensive.
yea that's bout right even tho i got mine in the baltimore city, md. let's see: at 15 and 9 months you can take the permit test (written test). pass that then pay $45 to get your permit plus that big ol' yellow ROOKIE DRIVER bumper sticker then go to driving school which ran me about $280. do 30 in class hours then 6 on the road hours 16 and 1 months you can to and take your license test. pass that get and you get your license with time restrictions and whatnot. but after 18 none of that matters so... THEN after 18 months without a moving violation you can get your full license but of course you'll still but facing the left because your under 21

That's how it is here in North Carolina. Both a learner's permit and a license is the same price. ($10)
