I was accepted to my dream school, Fisk University about two weeks ago. I am very excited because I worked very hard to get my a** in this school. Now I need help from my fellow Fiskites to let me know what I should expect from Fisk my freshmen year and the years to come. 8)
P.S. I need all the information that anyone can give me, so if you are a
student of Fisk, don't be afraid to let me anything, because I am one of you all now.
Spread Love 8)
Hello my fellow FISKITES!
I, as well have been accepted into FISK! I am so excited! I wanted to come down for Spring Family Weekned; however, my Parents are debating right, because they have to take in April and Aug (Defintely for Freshman Orientation)
Do you think it would be worth my while to come for the Spring Family Weekend or Do you the Weeks Freshman Orientation will be enough to give me an idea on what to expect from FISK.
Do you know of any scholarships opportunites at FISK? My mother has spoken with some people from Admissions only. Thus Far, my Mother, has not contacted anyone from the Registrar's Office We are planning on sending out $500.00 Fee with in the next two weeks.
I am the quite type, so are the students laid back? Why does the TSU students always have a been with the FISK students?
First of all, welcome to the FISK experience! Spring Family Weekend is this hyper condensed event in which the activities of a school year are condensed into one weekend. It's definitely worth attending.
Freshman Orientation week is a whole 'nother thang! Spring Family Weekend is kind of a primer for Freshman Orientation Week. Freshman Orientation week is when first year students learn the ins and outs of campus and prove that they are worthy of wearing the title "fiskite".
Spring Family Weekend is a great way to get to know some of the people who you will live and school with for the next 4 years. The Black College Dance Exchange conference will be here during Spring Family Weekend, so that means more stuff to do...
However, only 25 women and 25 guys can stay on campus during Spring Family Weekend, so get your registration in on time! Success at FISK really depends a lot on your ability to network and get to know people who can make the journey easier and that includes info about scholarships, etc. There are some students here who believe that no matter what you major is, your TRUE major is relationships on this campus.
Whatever you decide, I hope to see you at FISK within the next few months!
THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING! I AM DEFINTELY LOOKING FOWARD TO IT. FROM WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN BEING ON CAMPUS; WHEN PARENTS COME TO DROP OF THEIR KIDS FOR THE FALL SEMEMSTER, ME BEING A UPCOMING FRESHMAN, HOW LONG DO MOST PARENTS STAY IN TOWN? MY PARENTS WILL PROBALBY STAY IN TOWN FOR 2-3 DAYS TO MAKE SURE I AM SETTLE IN.
YES, I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I AM A FISKITE
Most parents stay through the weekend. I don't know if you are male or female but bring appropriate Convocation attire. Convocation is the time when first-year students are officially welcomed to the University. Ladies should wear white dresses and men should have on dark suits. The dress should be white and very conservative. To get an idea, go to www.fisk.edu and click on "Admission to FISK"; then click on "Talented Tenth Enrichment Day". Look at the casual pics and you'll get the idea...
I am a Female. Yes, I see...very conservative! I like that! Do some Parents come back for the Convocation? It looks like something that Parents would want to right there taking pictures. I am still looking to the answers to the questions posted that I asked before.
Do you know of any scholarships opportunities at FISK?
I am the quite type, so are the students laid back?
Why do the TSU students always have a beef with the FISK students?
One addition Question, What info can you give on if a Student wants to Pledge? And if discretion is the key, how will the sorority know that you are interested in pledging? Do you want until you hear or see something posted that they are having an information session?
Thank you again for all of the info!
Hello, I will be coming to FISK next Fall.
Are most of the students friendly on campus? What is the atmosphere like in the dorms? What rumors are you referring to. What Classification on you?
I am really looking to coming to FISK, when I first to came to visit the campus and went through the tour and I was like.........YESSSSSSSSSS, this is my school!
First of all, let me shout out FISK Angel! FISK Angel, did you go to Speech Night? What did you think? Did you know that one of the HBCU-Central staff is a FISKite?
Now on to Guest's questions...
If you don't have at least a 3.0/24 ACT or SAT equivalent, then forget about merit scholarships from FISK. You can, however, apply for the endowed scholarships open to incoming freshmen. My advice would be to call the Admission office (888.702.0022), let them know that you were on the HBCU-central website and someone told you to check with the office about scholarships. The endowed scholarship application can be gotten from www.fisk.edu, just click on the link that says "University Scholarships". The deadline is May 1...
If you consider yourself to be the "quiet" type, then you will fit in well at FISK. Many students here were "the quiet type" in their home environment, but you will come out of your shell a little-especially if you want leadership roles on campus. You should really come to Spring Family Weekend in April. You can really see and feel what everyday life is like.
Like Howard v. Hampton, Morehouse v. Clark, FISK and TSU have had a mostly friendly rivalry for years. Unfortunately a few knuckleheads(mostly Nashvillians and I am one) take it seriously. FISK and TSU students socialize together, MISS FISK and Miss TSU exchange Coronation greetings, many cousins, friends, and siblings are between the two. FISK, however, is very small and we become accustomed to seeing the same faces everyday so when someone comes on campus who doesn't attend, then we know it. Plus visitors do things that FISKites don't, like hang on the **** walls. You'll see what I mean when you get here. Once you're here, you will learn a little more about the history of the relationship between FISK and TSU. But for the most part, Tigers and FISKites are trying to get their college experience on...
About Greek life, my best advice for a successful candidacy is to lay in the cut your freshman year focusing on your grades (must be 3.0 or better) and community service. Leave your preconceived notions at home and observe the actions of all the organizations on campus to best determine which one fits you. Your eligibility begins sophomore year, so you will see the girls going into advertised information sessions and what you need to be prepared. Discretion is key....DO NOT go around talking to people and saying things like "ooh, that's my sorority", "those are MY girls" because BELIEVE ME they have ears. If you are just bursting at the seams and need to talk, there are people on campus you can talk to but they are generally not your peers. BTW, I am greek :-)...
Regarding the dorms, Jubilee Hall is the best dorm and it is the residence for freshman girls. It is a National Historic Landmark and the most prominent building on campus. There are two girls to a room and community bathrooms. You can have a fridge but not a microwave or fry daddy. Come to Spring Family Weekend and you'll see. One thing I would ask you to remember: don't come downstairs or outside in anything you wouldn't want to be photographed in. It shows that you don't have hometraining and unfortunately every year there are some females who are tacky enough to try the "scarf and houseshoes to the cafe" thing. FISK Angel, I hope you aren't one of them but I'm sure you know who I'm talking about :-)...As a landmark, anyone could be in Jubilee Hall at ANY time. Plus, alumni have a fit when they come back and see girls looking tacky. Get to know Ms. Gamble, the Dorm Director, when you visit. She is a FISKite and can school you on the proper way to be. Be respectful but stay AWAY from the other lady, she is CLUELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She's got that whole "I'm from California and I don't know about tradition" thing-UGGGGGGGGH!
If for some reason, you don't get in Jubilee (didn't pay your admission fee by May 1), you will be in Crosthwaite. Crosthwaite is primarily the sophomore girls dorm but there are some freshmen in there. Same living set-up as Jubilee. If you have paper, you can request your own room but it costs about 2G extra a year.
There are computer labs all over campus, but if you have your own BRING your own. I say this because you don't want to be waiting in line or held hostage to a lab being closed when you need to complete a paper.
Keep the questions coming and I'll have you prepared in no time to be a "Daughter Ever on the Alter" :-)...
yea, what he or she said about being the quiet type is right... back home i was really quiet, but since i began attending fisk, i have grown to be outspoken and confident.. the fisk family really takes you in... if u have any other questions, my email adress is AngeleeS10@hotmail.com... feel free to keep in touch!
