ISSUES WITH SKIN COLOR Posted on 02-19-2005

Now I don't know if anything like this has been posted before, but I'll post it anyways. I was just in the Fellas Forum and I noticed that this website has a great deal of posts about light skinned vs. dark skinned. I was just wondering what your thoughts are about this. Do you think this is a problem? We finally got white people(not all, but some) to except us for the color of our skin, but then black people want to go and split our race into light skinned, medium-brown skinned, and dark skinned, which is just bringing us back to square one. How can we expect other races to accept us if we can't even do it. I know a lot of dark-skinned females who will not try to date a guy if a light-skinned female likes the same guy. They feel like they can't compete. Now I am NOT blaming the brothas for anything, but the fact that most(not all) black men will only date light females does not help the situation. I also noticed that black people don't really start to seperate themselves into different shades of black until their teenage years, or at least by the time they start high school. I'm not saying this is a fact, but it's just what I have noticed in my 19 years of living. I never knew that I was considered brown-skinned or dark-skinned until I started high school. I've been to numerous elementary and middle schools and the issue of light-skinned vs. dark-skinned NEVER came up. Honestly, before I started high school, I never even notices that there were different shades of black people. But once I started high school, every light skinned person I met had to let it be known that they are light-skinned and I'm not. So my next question is, why do you think this issue gets bigger as we get older? I'm in college now, and my black friends always talk about how they only date light skinned men so their kids won't be dark. It's pretty sad listening to them. So do you all think that the battle of the light-skin vs. dark-skin will ever end? Will black people ever accept the fact that we are all African-Americans, and not light, medium brown, and dark? I hope so. I know that a lot of people will blame this problem on television, because most television shows have light-skinned actresses and maybe a dark-skinned side-kick (the UPN show 'One On One' for example), but do you think there are any other reasons? Now, I'm not trying to start any arguments, I just want to know what you all think about this issue. Thanks. PEACE!

Man....Ive heard some PRETTY crazy things since Ive been in college. From everything like "You lucky you brown-skinned, I dont date dark-skinned chicks" to " You fine as hell to be dark-skinned" People like that I stay away from because its really sad that you could be so close-minded at THIS age. Ive EVEN heard that ALL dark-skinned chicks are **** (and YES the guy was VERY serious) :? To not make it seem like dark-skinned is the **** I even know guys who stereotype all lightskin females as being stuck up and high maintenance. You'd be surprised at the stuff guys are content with. My own BROTHER doesnt even date african american females  I just laugh at them becuase in the end they'll NEVER find a soul mate or even a GIRLFRIEND for that matter.
It's funny you show your anger saying "They will never" because they don't want to date a sister or some dark skinned...seems like you are holding a grudge against those men who do have a preference....which is a contradiction to what you said the first 2 sentences. ^.^
Anger?? Their is nothing ANGRY about what I posted, I merely stated my experiences on the topic and gave my opinion. A Grudge?? You seem to be gettin extremely defensive, did what I describe maybe depict YOUR actions when it comes to choosing a girl? :? Maybe I shouldnt have used NEVER but what I meant was that most people who dont "EXPAND their horizons" when it comes to dating are less likely to find what there looking for because the "window" isnt open all the way....capeesh

This relates to the topic I did about a month ago, askin if personal preferences are really genetic or based on natural attraction that can't be helped, or if it's because of social influence, and I think it is 80% influence 20% genetic. Bein in LA, the color complex was definitely an issue. I'm probably Amare Stoudamire or Omarion's color, but back in high school, I really thought I was DARK AS HELL to where I used to want to stay out the sun and not get darker, because the girls used to love light skinned boys with curly hair and light eyes, just like most guys did and still seem to like. My homeboy is dark as hell, meaning darker than Shaq and KG, but he said he usually doesn't date girls darker than him (even though I don't think it's possible). I believe that what people tend to claim is their "preference" is definitely based on influence, and usually depending on where they grow up at. That's the only thing that explains how girls down south may prefer a dude who's darker with dreds and how southern dudes like thicker girls, compared to LA people likin light skinned light eyes curly hair and dudes likin thinner girls.

But ALL the fine chocolate boys i know have great personalities. So my experience has just made chocolate and black-black men more attractive to me..... mmm-mmm-mmm with the EXCEPTION of Michael Ealy. That blue-eyed devil could that slow motion
