What's up people.... I just joined the board today, and was reading some of the older posts and actually saw alot of posts on this topic and wanted to ask something about it.
Basically up until I was around 10 I had all black friends, was just a typical black dude. Then my mom ended up moving to some preppy white town, which I had no control over. Over time i started to change more and more due to obvious reasons... i started having white friends, and taking interest in things not considered 'black'.
So I had no problem with this for a long time, just was nice to have friends in a new area and people to do stuff with. But now that im getting older... im realizing the reality of how white people are... such as white girls from these preppy towns not being interested in talking to a black dude, or white guys just looking at you as some **** tryin to intrude into their culture. So I find myself wanting to go to a black college now... i guess u can say im sick of being around white people (it was never my decision in the first place, i just had to adapt).
My question is.... did anyone else here grow up in a situation like this and find it hard to fit in at a black school. I'm worried about going there and then not fitting in because im not 'black enough'. I adapt pretty well to people around me so I figure after being there a while i'd eventually fit in fine.... but at first i'd feel like its a culture shock to some extent.
Just would like to hear some experiences with black people growing up around white people and then going to an HBCU... or hell, even if u didnt grow up in a situation like that, you probably could still tell me what you see at your own school and what its like for you. Like... do you know anyone that you're cool with that acts 'white'... or would you be the type to say 'i'm not talking to no preppy **** n*ggas". Be real... im tryin to hear the truth.
I'm also confused on how I should act if I did go to a HBCU.. ofcourse people gonna say just be yourself, but its possible to be yourself all while trying to fit in to some extent. If a dude was to try and fit in and hang around you off some Carlton type sh*t.. he'd obvoiusly get clowned (im not white to that extent but jus saying), so it just seems that its common sense to try and relate to people and if they can't relate to yo **** talking about some sh*t like going snowboarding, why even bring it up.
Well son I was once put in a situation like this before. My mother grew up in the ghetto and she was raised around nuthan but ****... Everyday she had to bust her A$$ just to make sure I had everything I needed as a child. One day she decided that living in the Ghetto was not an experience that she wanted me to experience so we moved to the Burbs. Everybody around me had both mama and daddy except foe my a$$. I thought I did not fit but as time went by I started to meet people who experienced some of the same things.
Hey just because you are talented and was raised around white folks does not mean that you are white. When white folks look at you they still see a black man and nothing else. I'm pretty sure you will be fit in at a HBCU.
P.Diddy went to HARVARD and now look at that man. Do you think he cared about what folks thought about him?
Hell NAW!!!!

i don't think you will have a problem, as long as you keep being yourself. don't change you for anyone. College is soooo different from high school, you'll always have plenty of people to become friends with.
As for P.Diddy attending Harvard Brother I think you have your schools mixed up
awww $hit i did mess up on P.Diddy.... He attended that weak a$$ Howard school in D.C.( TENNESSEE STATE)
The point is he still stayed in his books and now he is one of the top record producers in the industry. BAD BOY is worth more than 100 million.
Like my Professor says " Now What U Say, HELLO!!!
Man just cuz you were raised around white people dont mean u cant relate. Cuz there are all types of black people at HBCUs, The hood **** people, the people who grew up in the burbs, the geeks, the "cool" people. You gonan find somebody u relate too. And just cuz u were raised in the burbs doesnt mean u cant relate to people from the gutta.
Snake, why you being so **** hostile! What's that about? I've gone to predominantly white schools all my life, and I happen to agree alot with what Rod said. It's nothing personal! I don't think Rod was directing his comments at you like that anyway. Chill, buddy.
True, you can't always relate to everybody, but I've had mostly good experiences at Howard. I don't know about Tuskegee. Most people who I just can't get along with are ****. It doesn't matter what upbringing they had, it's the personality. An asshole is an asshole. Hopefully every college is diverse enough for each of us to find our own niche there.
It seems like you're trying to scare people away from HBCUs. I don't know, but it doesn't matter.
CrunkMonkey pretty much hit it on the nail.
Homie, u will be just fine. I don't know which HBCUs u have in mind, but contrary to what alot of people may believe, alot of the students who go to HBCUs come from the suburbs or predominantly white areas. That is especially the case at Howard. Alot of them have some serious doe. There are some straight SADDITY kids at this darn school  (not saying that is you).
I don't think u will have a problem fitting in just as long as u find people that u are comfortable and have a connection with. It may throw u off for a **** seeing nothing but brown 24/7, but it doesn't mean that all of those brown faces have the same personalities,likes/dislikes, backgrounds, etc. So of course u won't mesh with everyone, but that would even be the case if u went to a predominantly white institution. U just have to find your niche...and u will. Just remain open-minded and patient.
ignore him^^^he's just pissing people off...thaz what he likes to do
but fa real...I think u will be pleasantly suprised to find a number of people who grew up just like you when u get to an HBCU...u will fit in just fine
I chose Howard over any other HBCU for the simple fact that I believed they were considering managing and promoting me FOR FREE. Unfortunately, they 'changed their mind' and I'm stuck without a gym, manager (who screwed me over) and promoter. They have their problems...I see **** around every turn also. Are PWI's better? Sure.
Glad for ya Matsuo. D1-A is most definitely better than any HBCU. Anyone who disagrees is fooling themselves. But you seem to be missing one core-concept. Styles make your life. If your a party animal that likes to drink JD till he drops and do lines afterwards in the meanwhile bangin some white girls...Chico state is for you. If you want to have a shoe-in for a high paying job straight out of college, then a PWI is for you.
In my situation, I chose to go to an HBCU because it is best to know my surroundings. What better place to learn about the most powerful minority than at an HBCU? I get the persepective first hand, that's much more powerful than any single book I could have read.
It's all your style.
