Y folks front like they ain't have dress codes in high school...people crack me up...thay ain't sayin uniforms...but be presentable.
What are you gonna do when you have to go to work and guess what...you're tired and having a bad hair day...go in your pj's wit rollers???
BE SMART...and for all those who can't read...DON'T COME TO HAMPTON
its really not that serious... girls, dont wear your club clothes to class. guys, no hats or doo rags. and dont be walkin around in ur pajamas, but its easy to get away with that.
as far as it being strict... hmmm... the professor will most likely just tell you to remove your hat. and as a freshman, ur dorm director and ra's will comment if ur showing too much skin. like i said... not hard to understand, not that serious.
Now that is JUST too much no doo rags is understandable but NO HATS....please tell me that is in the buildings and classrooms and not for the whole entire campus
Again yes a mistake was made...but here is where I would utilize some sense knowing that hats must be worn to protect the body from the sun in the summer and keep ur head warm in the winter...but aren't needed in buildings and just a general sign of common courtesy.
But no hats in the building...no doo rags anywhere except your dorms.
Just basically use common sense.
For example...LAST NIGHT...I had to run somewhere quick and all I had on was my pajamas and a head wrap...it was no where important on campus so I rolled like that...however I would not pull that going to class.
WELL I WAS TOLD BY A HAMPTONIAN THAT HATS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT BBALL GAMES??? WHY??? ITS A RECREATIONAL EVENT
IF THE INFO I RECEIVED WAS WRONG, OH WELL THEN.
THEN WHO WANTS TO COME TO COLLEGE AND HAVE THE SAME DRESS CODE AS THEY DID IN HIGH SCHOOL???? LETS SEE HIGH SCHOOL VERSUS COLLEGE? BEING A TEENAGER VERSUS BEING AN ADULT??
I CANT WEAR A HATLER TOP AND SOME JEANS TO CLASS IF ITS 90 DEGREES OUTSIDE? COME ON NOW??? MY BACK SHOWING SHOULD NOT BE THAT SERIOUS.
WHEN I'M WORKING AT A COORPORATION AND THEY'RE PAYING ME, AND IT'S A REAL PROFESSIONAL ENVIROMENT THEN I UNDERSTAND DRESS CODE...DO NOT TRY TO COMPARE COLLEGE TO A PROFESSIONAL JOB, WHEN U KNOW THAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES ARE NOT THE SAME.
LADIES KNOW THAT WHEN IT'S PERM TIME AND THE ROOTS ARE BUGGING, A HAT IS NECESSARY AT TIMES...
PLENTY OF SCHOOLS DO NOT HAVE DRESS CODES AND ARE DOING FINE....IF YOUR WORK IS NOT SUFFERING, WHO CARES WHAT YOU HAVE ON...AS LONG AS YOU DRESS PROPERLY WHEN NECESSARY....FOR INSTANCE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, I BELIEVE, BUSINESS STUDENTS AT MY SCHOOL HAVE TO WEAR BUSINESS SUITS TO CLASS...BUT OTHER DAYS THEY CAN COME IN WHATEVER
A HAT OR A HALTER TOP IS REALLY NOT THAT SERIOUS....LIKE YOU SAID IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT DON'T COME TO HAMPTON, WHICH IS WHY I'M HAPPY WITH THE CHOICE I MADE...B/C FOR ME PERSONALLY I DISAGREE WITH A DRESS CODE FOR EVERYDAY ATTIRE IN COLLEGE...WHICH AGAIN IS WHY I GO TO SCHOOL WHERE I DO AND U GO TO SCHOOL WHERE U DO.
NOT HATING, BUT VOICING AN OPINION....QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS, FEEL FREE TO HOLLA AT A SISTA
Wow...happy to see that u wrote so much about our dress code...ur right u can't wear a hat to a B-ball came because its an indoor event. But respectful young men take their hats off in the building...so hey!
Ur post was too long tryin to convince me about my dress code...clearly we'll never see eye to eye..I'm at Hampton and ...ur at or going to Howard
All I can say is if u can't get past the dress code u need not come to Hampton, anyone who's serious about their college search would a) not be swayed by something so simple and b) knows the deal about how we do on the regular

You are so right. If you base your college decision on not being able to rock a do rag and a cap, then you REALLY do not need to be a HAMPTONIAN. If you just have to have that as criteria for your school, then there are many other schools out there for you.
The dress code is really not even an issue for most, it becomes a way of life. I guess thats why when corporations come to our campus on random visits, they always leave impressed with the way that Hampton students carry themselves at ALL times, not just during the interviews.
Damn...I LOVE Hampton!!
^^^ you're right...nobody rolls out of bed in the morning thinking about the dress code...
it comes natural...most Hamptonians already have that self respect already instilled in them before they get here, some are still learning, but in the end we'll come out as great representatives of African Americans in society...well for the most part
^^I agree, and God knows I do love MY H-I-U.
Even in grad school, I find it hard to believe that dudes are allowed to wear do-rags in class?? or hats for that matter?
One of my grad school professors (an A&T grad I might add) doesn't allow men nor women to wear hats in class, of course tho he was a civil rights lawyer and thinks everything is discrimination,
However, you can see that its not just a Hampton thing, its a professional thing, a business thing. And quite frankly, goin to class should be viewed almost the same as doing a job, HOW BOUT THIS.......IT IS A JOB!! You should come to class with a professional attitude, and likewise if you fail in your classwork, you won't progress just like in the business world. You don't go to class to have fun and come anyway you want (in that case why not just wear rollers or a wifebeater, and call it a day)
And Chocolate...thats why you are at Howard and NOT AT HAMPTON. (and that wasn't hating by the way, seriously)
Like the others are saying though, no one at Hampton really cares about a dress code, some things should be just known anyway. You just put on some actual clothes, brush your hair, and take off the do rag, PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
CHANGE CLOTHES...........AND GO!!
