Did you choose the College/University you are currently attending? If you attend a Liberal Arts College, A&TUniversity, or whatever why did you choose your school and what sparked your intrest ? Whats sets a Liberal Arts College apart from an A&T College ? To start ...I am looking for a medium size school that has smaller class sizes along with with a welcoming atmosphere ... *Howard *Hampton *Spelman -Liberal Arts * NC A&T - * Florida A&M - Are all great schools ... so why did you choose your school?

for once i can agree w/ him.... i chose NC A&T b/c it was close to home, they had my major (at the time it was Computer Science) and the atmosphere is crazy... everyone is like family around here, the teachers interact w/ students and they really want you to be about something... along with the rich history that goes behind it... the area is straight... there's 7 colleges that are all within 30 mins. of each other, so you won't be limited to what's on your campus...

I went on a college tour my senior year in H.S. and had narrowed down my choices to Xavier, Tuskeegee or Spelman... then I went to Fisk and I liked the small campus and the fact that it was close to TSU, another HBCU... It also helped that 13 other students from the California HBCU tour chose Fisk.... AND they gave me a full scholarship with room and board included, so I was all set

We're not even gonna talk about my original college search...it was a mess! But transferring schools, I knew I wanted a school that was BIG (my school is the second biggest school in Ohio besides Ohio State), close to home, cheap ($15,000 a year for tuition, room, and board), a school that had a lot to offer, both academically and socially. It just had more options than other schools especially academically since I'm currently undecided on a major. They have ALL my possible majors, and i can get home on my own with NO hassles (which was important to me) and there are plenty of social options with parties every weekend, but there aren't parties EVERY DAY like Ohio State. OH yeah and I like the diversity too. I wanted somewhere that I could get lost in the crowd if I really wanted to, but know my professors at the same time. And Kent State offers ALL of that. ANYHOW, Spelman and Hampton are your best bets, FAMU is the largest one of those on ur list, and Spelman is the smallest but has a REALLY good reputation along with small classes. However, Hampton has small classes, that get smaller with your major. your only big class will be your UNV 101 class that has 120 students at the most...which isn't too bad.

Well, I go to Howard. I chose Howard because of: 1) Reputation- Howard, Spelman and Morehouse are known as the Black Ivies and its reputation stands alone. I came from a nationally known high school with an entrance exam and a 99% 4 year college acceptance rate, so I knew that I had to go to a school that my classmates could recognize, because people like them would be the movers and shakers in society. No one wants to go on a job interview and the employer doesnt recognize your college. While of course your grades take you a long way, college name opens a lot of doors- consider someone coming out of NYU with a 3.0 and someone coming out of Wichita State College with a 3.9, which one is the employer going to pick? Furthermore, Howard's impressive alumni made me think, well they must be doing something right 2) Location- I'm from New York, so I knew that I couldn't go to college in Smallville or some other tiny town. DC is good because there are alot of resources and connections to me made in the nation's capital. 3) Word of mouth- I never actually visited Howard so I had to go by other people's impressions. Yeah, Howard is in the ghetto. But you would think that it was surrounded by absolute squalor from the way people talk about it. The neighborhood Howard is in isn't that damn bad and its undergoing gentrification. I really enjoyed everything that I heard about, from academics, to school spirit to homecoming. In short, I've truly treasured my last 2 years here and I'm regretful that it will be coming to a close in another 2 years. I advise anyone who's interested in coming to take a tour, preferably on a Friday in the spring or fall, and you'll fall in love just like I have.

I chose Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University for several different reasons. I NEVER thought I would attend an HBCU, but here I am... and I love it. I applied to 15 different schools, and three were HBCUs (Xavier, Spelman, and FAMU). The other twelve.... well we are not going to list all of those, but Univ. of Iowa, Univ. of Illinois, Michigan State, and Univ. of Maryland-College Park were my TOP choices. I planned to go to U of Maryland since my junior year. I drove down there and everything, BUT unfortunately I was not awarded any type of scholarship. Univ. of Iowa gave me a scholarship and Michigan State, but not enough to make my decision for me. In March 2004, I was getting nervous, because I had not chosen which college I would attend in the fall. One day, I received a letter from FAMU (a school I hadn't even applied to) offering me a full-ride. My mother's coworker had a dream about me receiving a scholarship the week before! So my mother was convinced that this was a blessing sent from God. My cousin graduated from FAMU in 2003, so I knew quite a bit about FAMU prior to receiving the letter. I had not visited the campus, though. In April 2004, my mother and I drove from Nashville (we flew there) to Tallahassee, Florida. We did not know what to expect. My mother didn't really want me to go to an HBCU, she was hooked on Univ. of Iowa. When we drove into Tally-Ho I was stunned by the lack of a "real" downtown, the dirt roads, as well as the "country" feel. I was thinking, "This isn't anything like Orlando..." I tried to make myself like the city, the campus, the dorms, the library... everything... All because I received the scholarship, BUT my mother wasn't impressed. It definitely was a culture shock. Well let's speed things up. August 2004, I arrive in Tally-Ho to begin the fall semester, and during the first week I met SOOO many cool, interesting, and DOWN-TO-EARTH people. Everyone at FAMU, though it is a rather large school, is friendly. We are all family. Once I realized this, I felt that the scholarship I received really was a blessing from God. He really wanted me to be here. Even though I couldn't see myself on FAMU's campus when I visited in March, it didn't matter because God placed me on FAMU's campus for a reason. I LOVE MY SCHOOL. Yea I really had to do a lot of adjusting to cultural differences during my first semester, but it was all worth the struggle. Being so far from home, has really made me grow as a person. I am in the 5-year MBA program, and I am confident that my business school will prepare me for the corporate world. What I loves most about FAMU is the FAMILY VIBE we have going on, and I probably would find that at Univ. of Iowa or Univ. of Maryland. Some of the COOLEST people attend FAMU. And rarely will you meet anyone who thinks their sh*t doesn't stink. I love Florida, and the weather..lol Moral of this story, everything that looks great on the outside to you... Is not for you. Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper to find what God has for you, because ultimately, he is going to put you where he wants you to be! I know that was way too long. :???:

Girl that made alot of sense... I had been feeling the same way about my school choices but your story was a true Blessing ! My top choices look real good to me from the outside but I am not sure that they are necessarily for me ... My Grandma always tell me to let go and let God so I am going to just relax because I was too stressed out about College and everything else but I know God will whats in his will for me so I will have to wait patiently until that day comes but Cafe thats wonderful how everything worked out wonderful for you in the end girl ...

I chose to attend Hampton at a last minute decision. I was going to Bennett in NC but then Hampton faxed me my acceptance letter after I sent a check off to Bennett to reserve my space. The slowness of the letter, one thing that makes me upset about Hampton but I still love it. I've always wanted to go to Spelman but I didn't get it which was a blessing in disguise. ATL and me...no way. I'm glad that I did not go to Bennett because well, I visited NC after I came to Hampton, and found out that it just was not my scene. 1. Hampton actually had my two top choices for majors- business and history. It was also far away from Nashville. I love home but not that much. I could have gone to TSU or Fisk but that was just too close. VA was the farthest in an HBCU that I could get away. I made what you called a blind decision. I had never visited nor seen Hampton until PreCollege 2002. 2. They have a beautiful campus. Living on waterfront property definitely has its benefits. 3. I did not know anyone except one girl from my J&J chapter going to Hampton. 4. Hampton just fit.

You never told me that story Brett.... anywho...I had every intention of going out of state for my schooling. But when my mom started attending Mercer University(it ain't cheap), I was limited to which schools I could go to. So I knew that I pretty much had to stay in state so that I could recieve the HOPE Scholarship. Well, I applied to Fort Valley, Albany State, West Ga., and Savannah State. I toured FVSU and it just wasn't my fit, and I didn't want to attend West Ga, so that limited me to Albany State and Savannah State....FAST FOWARD... I chose SSU because of the Southern Hospitality, the friendliness of the faculty, staff, and students. And because I got on my knees and prayed that God would send me in the right direction. Most of the buildings are new on campus, and there's a family atomosphere on the campus also. Plus it's 4 hours away from home, so if something were to happen to my family, I know I could be back home.
