MTV reality show Posted on 05-10-2004
Mr. Chicagosocialite

So check this out! My friend and I joke all the time about MTV reality shows and how it would be crazy to be on one. So, as a joke I responded to one of their casting calls called “first time”. It’s a show that will follow people doing something for the first time (starting a new career, going to college etc). In my case it would be first time in college. As I said we joked about shows like this before but I always thought it was impossible to get picked. I’m sure they receive tons of information from people wanting to be on these shows, so I understand how not being picked is common. I saw that they were doing a new show so I applied. The funny thing is this time they responded. I haven’t officially gotten asked to do the show but things are looking good. They like my story line and think my first year of college will be really interesting. I’m in the second to last phase of the selection process. I’m not sure where they are going creatively with the show but I hope it’s nothing like College Hill. I’m going through the process to see how far I can get but if I am selected I don’t think I’m going to accept it for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is I don’t think anything good could come of it. As an African-American male I’m sure their main goal would be to make a complete fool of me. I don’t think corporate America would take me seriously after such a show. Second, I think it would draw unnecessary attention to me. Third, my parents would frown upon it. Fourth, I don’t even think Howard would allow them to follow me around campus. If I were selected, the taping would be intense. MTV wants to tape me from the moment I arrive on campus in August until finals in May. I may be jumping the gun here because I don’t even know if they are going to pick me but I’m pretty sure I’m not going to do it. What do u guys think about it?

Congrats on getting that far Socialite. Before you get too bent on not wanting to do it, think about what it might do for America getting a good look at a prestigious HBCU. I know if I had a good look at an HBCU early, I would definitely want to go and I would try and influence my friends to do so as well. You are a positive brotha, and I dont think they could make a fool out of you if they tried. But it is up to you, so good luck with the last few phases, and if ya get it, rep Howard to the fullest.
I agree. If you think that this is something that you might wanna do then go for it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. On the same note, if you have any looming hesitations, think it over carefully before you lock yourself into such a lengthy contract. It may be fun to have your freshman year documented for you to look back on. Just remember not to do anything silly that they can flip into something completely wild and not so flattering.

be a true capaitalist and do it for the money! Disregard racial pride and sterotypical casting. $26,000 Howard tuition paid with extra cheese on the side.* *these are not my true views.

I hope not! Compromising one’s principles for personal gain does not make you a “true capitalist”; it makes you a ****!
