So for the Spelman Women, When did ya'll get your scholarships? I was reading some of the old threads for info and saw the excellent response. Class of 2010 is just as excited and anxious as ya'll were, so any advice ya'll have would be great. Like what sort of things do freshmen do during the week? How are the class schedules? Do you normally get the classes you need? What is Manley Hall like? I heard about HH, LLCI and Abbey but nothing about Manley.

I know...I'm real late on this topic. I received no real scholarship or grants from Spelman. Just $31,600 (that may be off by a few hundred) in loans. My mother and I declined them. I don't know. Maybe if I submitted my FAFSA earlier, I would've received a better I award. Then again, I doubt it. My mother and I made the decision not to take out any loans...at least not early on. If we do, it will be the very last resort. I try not to worry too much. I have three and half more years to look for and apply for scholarships and grants. Plus, I will have a better academic history and more experience. In other words, I will have a better resume so to speak and thus I will increase my chances of receiving awards. I'm also planning on working. If I'm not mistaken, there are more scholarship and grant opportunites as a college student than as an high school student. Looking for scholarships in my senior year of high school was horrible. There was only one person I felt comfortable asking for recommendations. Unfortunately she had a few hundred other students to worry about. The other two teachers (AP English, Journalism) I could've asked but they were also very busy. I wasn't comfortable asking them to write letters, but if I needed them, I knew I had to ask. I did well in their classes and knew that they wrote great letters. I'm really need to learn how to communicate and be more assertive. I'm hoping I will overcome this at Spelman. I want to feel comfortable with my teachers. I mostly relied on Fastweb for scholarship searching. I was slightly annoyed because I felt that many of the scholarships weren't legit. I've read a lot about recognizing scholarship scams. I think the best institution to receive a scholarhship from is the institution you're attending (Spelman in this case), the government (in my case this was the Michigian Merit Award -I only received $1,000 because I'm attending school out of state. The normal award is around $2,700) or a well established foundation/organization (UNCF, Jackie Robinsion, etc). I try not to deal with anything else. Maybe I'm wrong for this- I don't know. There's a lot of work involved, but I'm hoping persistence and thorough researching will pay off. (end rant) Edited for typos

Better late than never! i wish you the best of luck, my SPELMAN sistah! I'll keep u in my tuition prayers! This tuition isn't a joke and a payment due on or before August 11th is becoming REAL SERIOUS! But have faith and God'll work it out!
