Board Upholds R Rating for 'Fahrenheit' 2 hours, 43 minutes ago By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer LOS ANGELES - Michael Moore (news) and his distributors lost their appeal Tuesday to lower the R rating for "Fahrenheit 9/11," his scathing **** on President Bush (news - web sites)'s actions before and after the Sept. 11 attacks. Lions Gate Films and IFC Films, the movie's distributors, said an appeals board for the Motion Picture Association of America rejected their request to reduce the rating to PG-13. The R rating prohibits those 17 and younger from seeing "Fahrenheit 9/11" without an adult. Moore urged younger teenagers to go see the film anyway. "I encourage all teenagers to come see my movie, by any means necessary. If you need me to sneak you in, let me know," he said. "Fahrenheit 9/11," which won the top honor at last month's Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites), depicts the White House as asleep at the wheel before the Sept. 11 attacks. Moore accuses Bush of fanning fears of future **** to win public support for the Iraq (news - web sites) war. The movie was rated R for "**** and disturbing images and for language." The images include an Iraqi man tossing a **** baby into a truckload of bodies, Iraqis burned by **** and a public beheading in Saudi Arabia. Tom Ortenberg, president of Lions Gate Films, had argued to the appeals board that 15- and 16-year-olds should be free to see the film on their own because they could end up in military service in Iraq in the next few years. "I hope the R rating doesn't have a large impact on the box office," Ortenberg said. "I've spoken with many parents, including some on the appeals board, who absolutely said they are going to take their children to see the film. We'll just have to hope the teenagers we're encouraging to see this picture find their way in through parents or adult guardians." "Fahrenheit 9/11" opens in limited release in New York on Wednesday and nationwide in about 850 theaters Friday. Jonathan Sehring, president of IFC Films, said the R rating could reduce the film's theatrical revenues by 10 to 20 percent. The distributors had hoped the appeals board "would step back and see the bigger picture and importance of this film, and one of the key audiences that this film should be seen by," Sehring said. "Some of the images are disturbing, but in a year or two, if kids are off to war, they're going to be faced with those disturbing images for real." Last-minute challenges to movie ratings are not uncommon, said MPAA spokesman Richard Taylor. The timing depends on how soon before theatrical release the movie is presented to the MPAA for initial rating, he said. Films are rated by a panel of parents or those with parenting experience. If a distributor challenges the rating, it is screened for an appeals board of Hollywood workers, which also hears oral arguments from the distributor. The ratings squabble came after a row Moore had with Disney, which refused to let subsidiary Miramax distribute "Fahrenheit 9/11," saying the movie was too politically charged. Miramax bosses Harvey and Bob Weinstein bought back the film from Disney and lined up Lions Gate and IFC to help release it. Dem (<--lol boy quit playin'...i could c if there were no evidence showin' that u're Demmeri, but umm...check what ya profile has down as ya AIM s/n :roll ANYwayz tho... I STILL haven't read that article 'cause I have somethin ELSE i gotta do...but i AM gonna read it.... now, 2 Dem AND Triad....i glanced over the article and see the writer stating different detailed points about the movie and trying to explain them and whatnot... okay, before I do read it...and even in response to what both of you have said....EVEN IF "Fahranheit 9/11" was set up specifically to negatively affect the Bush support, his votes this election, etc....i still say SO WHAT?!? it IS fair... think about it like this....I was hearing these DJs talk about this earlier on the radio, and I already KNEW it, but it was just more emphasis hearing THEM - FELLOW JOURNALISTS - discuss it... America's media distorts the realities of society as a WHOLE....of the UNIVERSE....of planet EARTH....of America...our neighboring countries...including our alliances....as well as our so-called "enemies".... There is a WHOOOOOOOOOOOLE lot that we STILL do not know, even after the release of this movie....and probably never will...actually, DEFINITELY never will....the government and the media know how to expose what they want to...and they know how to "clean up" and/or hide what they want.... Can Moore help it if this film comes off as a maybe 2-hour tell of EVERYthing we have NOT seen!?!??! The U.S. Government and media show us what they WANT us to know....I mean, some may be the truth....some may be MADE UP truths (aka LIES)....but whatever's the case, NEVER are we shown the WHOLE truth, or even MOST of it, for that matter... And that's all this film is....2-plus hours (or however long it is) of the OTHER side of what has REALLY been goin' on....or in other words, the stuff the MEDIA (& the "powers that be") has conVENIENTLY managed to leave out.... how DARE someone label an anti-Bush documentary "unfair" with all of this CRAP we have been fed for DECADES....let alone, the last few YEARS....!! with this documentary, Moore is practically puttin' some of the rest of what NEEDS TO BE SEEN on the table and is saying, "AMERICANS, HERE IT IS....NOW, YOU BE THE JUDGES" - ain't NOTHIN' wrong with that! and as for Dem's statement about "Blacks hatin' this country"....sweety, of course I can't speak for all Blacks....I can speak for myself.... Jameya by no means hates the United States of America....I was blessed to have been born and been able to live here....particularly in comparison with the rest of the world....this is a pretty descent deal overall and there are endless opportunities.... Okay, but with that said...I can love this country....and not particularly care for its government at the same time.... I don't care for anyone...spewing forth lies and atTEMPTing to play on my intelligence and/or emotions...which is preCISEly what the government in this country does, mostly INDIRECTLY (which is why so many people don't realize and/or pay attention it).... Not THIS COUNTRY, but the people who RUN IT, has put a lot of blood on its hands, and I'm not just talking about this war with Iraq - I'm talking about it's enTIRE HISTORY, from day ONE... Not this country, but the people who RUN IT...have made it as a whole look so terrible throughout history.... The people who RUN IT...have been so corrupted, crooked, manipulative, dishonest, etc. etc. etc...the list just goes on... So no, I do not hate this country...and I personally don't feel most Blacks do either....we appreciate this place....but as a human being, I moreso appreciate the TRUTH...which I don't appreciate being withheld from me.... and umm, nobody is brainwashed, dear....i shake MY head, as a matter of fact, @ how the minds of the Bush ADVOCATS (such as yourself) have been brainwashed into thinking Bush is so GREAT, as is his administration and most of his actions/decisions...now u wanna talk about somebody's MIND being messed with ... ((oopz...didn't mean 2 write that much...but...oh well - ya'll know once I get started, it's hard 4 me to stop))
