Dreadlocs....(Whats to DREAD about them) Posted on 12-08-2004
Highly_Insane

Everybody always talkin bout "You dreadin' your hair", "Your "dreads" look nice. "Dread this, Dread that". What happened to the "Locs" part. dread ( P ) Pronunciation Key (drd) v. dread·ed, dread·ing, dreads v. tr. To be in **** of. To anticipate with alarm, distaste, or reluctance: dreaded the long drive home. Archaic. To hold in awe or reverence. Profound fear; ****. Fearful or distasteful anticipation. See Synonyms at fear. An object of fear, awe, or reverence. Why should you be terrified of them. Or why should they scare you. They are beautiful. To me anyways. I was looking at something and I don't know how true this is but they people who first looked at the people with locs, dreaded them because they looked scary or something. Like I said, don't quote me on that but I was just looking at something. Anyways, I was just starting this post to let you all know there is nothing to Dread about locs....so let's stop dreadin' and just start locin. lol. They are LOCS not Dreads.....do no fear them, they are nothing to fear. How do you feel about the situation.(This is just no for people with locs in their hair.) Here are some responses posted on another forum:

I REALLY don't think people say "Dreads" for the purpose of meaning it's something bad. Don't nobody feel like saying "Dreadlocks" all the time. It's more of an adopted universal habit than a secret disdain for the hairstyle. *Walks out singing Redemption Song*

I love locs on a woman. Especially is she's dark-skinned wit white teeth, around 5'3 or 5'4, brown eyes, high cheekbones, got T & A for days , is in shape..... Or if she looks like Mya then Christmas came early to Cuperman.....growl!!!

That's a nice conspiracy theory you got there, (someones name), but do you actually KNOW people who think this way about dreadlocks? If not, don't worry about it.

that is not a conspiracy theory. You may carry on now...

actually, (name) is right. The term originated around the 60's or so, with the word 'dread' among rastafarians pointing to the 'dread' or 'fear' of Jah. You be reachin, (name).
Those are just some responses.

Why are Rastafarians trying to wipe themselves off the face of the planet by “extinguishing” themselves from other men? I bet you meant to say: This is how they DISTINGUISH themselves from other men, no? Where have I heard such misuse of English before…hmmm :? …I remember--that show, In Living Color! We have just about every episode on tape. You remind me of Tommy Davidson in the jail scenes, talking incoherently, but thinking he sounds intelligent. It’s as if you wrote the scripts. Brotha man, purchase a dictionary, thesaurus, synonym/antonym finder, use your spell/grammar check in Word or something, PLEASE; speak not on subjects you have no understanding of.

I certainly agree with u, this thread wasnt made for arguing, it was made for users to voice their opinion, i myself got a little carried away with my response to the thread but i was just voicing my opinion. Then "Phoenix" got all Philosophical on me. I just felt a little offended when the "individual" said white people allegedly were the ones who came about with the "Dreadlocs" word.

well, i've been going back & forth w/ myself for a while about getting dreds (i still call them that. . .and locs), finally i decided to go for it and loc my hair via the braidloc method. the 20th will mark 1 month of me having them. this is my longest time w/o permed hair. . .i tried going natural before and it didn't work for me, so hopefully i won't have a problem w/ my locs.
