um... growing up white then going to an HBCU? Posted on 02-27-2005

What's up people.... I just joined the board today, and was reading some of the older posts and actually saw alot of posts on this topic and wanted to ask something about it. Basically up until I was around 10 I had all black friends, was just a typical black dude. Then my mom ended up moving to some preppy white town, which I had no control over. Over time i started to change more and more due to obvious reasons... i started having white friends, and taking interest in things not considered 'black'. So I had no problem with this for a long time, just was nice to have friends in a new area and people to do stuff with. But now that im getting older... im realizing the reality of how white people are... such as white girls from these preppy towns not being interested in talking to a black dude, or white guys just looking at you as some **** tryin to intrude into their culture. So I find myself wanting to go to a black college now... i guess u can say im sick of being around white people (it was never my decision in the first place, i just had to adapt). My question is.... did anyone else here grow up in a situation like this and find it hard to fit in at a black school. I'm worried about going there and then not fitting in because im not 'black enough'. I adapt pretty well to people around me so I figure after being there a while i'd eventually fit in fine.... but at first i'd feel like its a culture shock to some extent. Just would like to hear some experiences with black people growing up around white people and then going to an HBCU... or hell, even if u didnt grow up in a situation like that, you probably could still tell me what you see at your own school and what its like for you. Like... do you know anyone that you're cool with that acts 'white'... or would you be the type to say 'i'm not talking to no preppy **** n*ggas". Be real... im tryin to hear the truth. I'm also confused on how I should act if I did go to a HBCU.. ofcourse people gonna say just be yourself, but its possible to be yourself all while trying to fit in to some extent. If a dude was to try and fit in and hang around you off some Carlton type sh*t.. he'd obvoiusly get clowned (im not white to that extent but jus saying), so it just seems that its common sense to try and relate to people and if they can't relate to yo **** talking about some sh*t like going snowboarding, why even bring it up.

I can feel you. I grew up around white people my entire life. The only black people I knew for a while was my own family (cousins etc) and their friends. I had always been the only black girl in my class until High School. I think that the only people who should have a problem are those that are close minded. If another person is unable to accept you because you act "white" that's their own inferiority complex because they feel they are not as good as you are. You should do fine. I was also wondering the same thing since I'm heading of to Spelman myself, but I am reassured because there are several other people going to your school who are in the same boat. We're all here for the black college experience right?

i don't think you will have a problem, as long as you keep being yourself. don't change you for anyone. College is soooo different from high school, you'll always have plenty of people to become friends with. As for P.Diddy attending Harvard Brother I think you have your schools mixed up
It was actually Howard I believe. And um he eventually dropped out too. But thats a good example of how college isnt for EVERY single person on the globe. Although most need it.

From my experiance going to an HBCU is like...a culture in itself pretty much. It has to be in your heart to go to one though. BUt if you thik thats what you want to do then dont let where you grew up stop you because really all your going to have to "adapt" to is college life, period. Or I should say HBCU life. Not being around black people so much as being around them in this capacity. Let me know if that makes sense.
