basically i just want an honest opinion about the schools. im thinking about applying to those schools and more for fall of 2009 but i just want to get some insight into the schools. any tips about admissions? how are the professors, the classes, the people, the dorms, the social scene, etc. also just a couple pros and cons of the school. hope im not asking for much.i just wanna get to know more about the schools other than what i read or see on their websites.=]
sincerely, lost in DC.=]
^^ right but it is only for upperclassmen. Do you go to school are Morehouse or Clark? How did you know that?
I go to CAU for DDEP/Math major. My mom knows everything about spelman she graduated in 71 so she gets a newsletter about all the campus happenings. My lil cousin is going to spelman next year. Also my family is 4 generations of morehouse men with last being my brother who graduated in 2006.
1) Admissions for Spelman, there is a 34% acceptance rate according to princetonreview.com, and I can believe it.
2) I am not a psychology major, but Dr. Bernice King (the late Rev. Dr. King's sister) is a professor in that department. Rumor has it that psychology is the easiest major at Spelman, but the long theses these ladies have to write I would beg to differ. Class sizes are small, except for labs for the pre-med students, those tend to be larger.
4)The people at Spelman:
Students: Friendly and open, the advice I give is you have to be a sister first to receive the sisterhood. If you come expecting everyone to kiss your behind like some girls, it won't happen. But if you come and you genuinely want to be there the whole school will open up to you.
Professors: You can always talk to your professors on a professional and personal level. They care about our future and how we are doing in and out of school.
Admin: Depends on who you know and the situation. Me personally, I love the Deans' Office, Admissions Office, and Study Abroad. Others do sometimes have attitudes, but they are in the minority.
5) Dorms: Like most hbcus most of the freshman dorms do not have a/c. However, if you apply and gain admission into the honor's program, you will stay in the dorm with a/c. Because we cannot pledge until sophomore year, our dorms are like our sororities. You have greek dorm names and colors, as well as dorm parties, stroll teams, etc.
The biggest events of the year are:
Morehouse-Spelman Homecoming (fashion show, rnb concert, hip-hop concert, football game, coronation-the dance, and tailgate)
Pretty/Nasty- Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi greek party during homecoming
Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Concert
Freshman Stepshow
And probates
The social scene is pretty quite on campus we do most of our partying off campus and at local ATL clubs.
If you need further help we have "A Day in Your Life At Spelman" in the fall for interested students with premed focuses. As well as "Spel-bound" in the Spring for accepted students. I definately recommend having a tour of each school.
Best of wishes
==> a 34% acceptance rate? hope i have a chance. ive dont about 270hours of community service includind tutoring and being a part of a group that educated DC youth on health related issues through theater and the arts.
-->i attend a college prep high school and our grading scale is different from most school.for instance at our school a 95-100 is an A, a 94 to an 88 is a B, and 87 to a 78 is a C, 77to a 68 (or 69)is a D and anything below is an F. because of the grading scale my GPA as of the 10th grade is a 3.0 however i've made 4.0s throughout my junior year so its subject to increase.
-->im also a candidate for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and working towards getting my diploma from them the end of my senior year.
--> ive also been in the future lawyers club, poetry club, film club, debate club, TLC (teen life club), Impact scholars program.
-->ive been making the honor role since 10th grade and the principals commendation since 11th grade
-->the first time i took the SAT i got a 1540 i believe but i plan on taking it again in Oct. or Nov.
==>i think ive done quite alot throughout my high school years. do you think that's enough 2 get me into Spelman?
-->any advice on filling out the application?
There is a system for how they accept applications. I suggest applying early notification (without binds) this way they see your application first. Applying earlier is always better. Also the Admissions Office may be implimenting an interview portion for students that are in the middle range for acceptance. Also they take into account your grading scale, so do not worry.
For your application I suggest applying with the Common Application. This way you can use the same application when applying to other schools. I did this and was able to use the same essay question for all of the schools to which I applied. The only con, is that I do not think the Common Application has an option for the honors program.
And Community service always looks good. If you get 30 more hours you may be eligible for the Bonners Scholarship, which pays full tuition (?, I am not exactly sure about the room and board).

yea, i was looking at the deadline for spelman early action and it said 11/15. so that would mean i would have to send in my application for spelman b4 then. however, i have to take my SAT either October 4th or November 1st and i don't think id get my scores in by November 15th. could i send my scores on a l8er date?
-->i downloaded and printed spelman's application form yesterday so i might just have 2 fill that 1 out.
-->honestly, im a bit nervous,i can only hope i get accepted.lol
^^ Call to make sure that that is the new application. Sometimes they change the essay. I still say take the SAT in October, and mark down to have Spelman recieve your test scores. You should be fine, I did the same thing.
Think about it this way, you can enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas without the worry about your application. Also look out for the GATES MILLENIUM SCHOLARSHIP.
