basically i just want an honest opinion about the schools. im thinking about applying to those schools and more for fall of 2009 but i just want to get some insight into the schools. any tips about admissions? how are the professors, the classes, the people, the dorms, the social scene, etc. also just a couple pros and cons of the school. hope im not asking for much.i just wanna get to know more about the schools other than what i read or see on their websites.=]
sincerely, lost in DC.=]
1) Admissions for Spelman, there is a 34% acceptance rate according to princetonreview.com, and I can believe it.
2) I am not a psychology major, but Dr. Bernice King (the late Rev. Dr. King's sister) is a professor in that department. Rumor has it that psychology is the easiest major at Spelman, but the long theses these ladies have to write I would beg to differ. Class sizes are small, except for labs for the pre-med students, those tend to be larger.
4)The people at Spelman:
Students: Friendly and open, the advice I give is you have to be a sister first to receive the sisterhood. If you come expecting everyone to kiss your behind like some girls, it won't happen. But if you come and you genuinely want to be there the whole school will open up to you.
Professors: You can always talk to your professors on a professional and personal level. They care about our future and how we are doing in and out of school.
Admin: Depends on who you know and the situation. Me personally, I love the Deans' Office, Admissions Office, and Study Abroad. Others do sometimes have attitudes, but they are in the minority.
5) Dorms: Like most hbcus most of the freshman dorms do not have a/c. However, if you apply and gain admission into the honor's program, you will stay in the dorm with a/c. Because we cannot pledge until sophomore year, our dorms are like our sororities. You have greek dorm names and colors, as well as dorm parties, stroll teams, etc.
The biggest events of the year are:
Morehouse-Spelman Homecoming (fashion show, rnb concert, hip-hop concert, football game, coronation-the dance, and tailgate)
Pretty/Nasty- Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi greek party during homecoming
Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Concert
Freshman Stepshow
And probates
The social scene is pretty quite on campus we do most of our partying off campus and at local ATL clubs.
If you need further help we have "A Day in Your Life At Spelman" in the fall for interested students with premed focuses. As well as "Spel-bound" in the Spring for accepted students. I definately recommend having a tour of each school.
Best of wishes
I'M SOOOO EXCITED FOR THE FALL lol. Sorry, I couldn't help myself haha
ok i'll think of some.lol. how come you wouldn't suggest that?
A liberal arts degree at Tuskegee is ok. I know because I'm a History major. We don't get as much respect as the other colleges at Tuskegee. There is more funding and programs centered around the sciences and business. When I look at the curriculm for the pyschology major, I don't know how well that will prepare you for the MCAT or finally med school. I would suggest Biology or one of the other science type majors.
As for some other pointers in regards to Tuskegee...
1. Keep copies of everything. They WILL lose something.
2. Financial Aid ****. Don't expect a large package unless you have outstanding grades and test scores.
3. Housing and "The cafe" are bearable. Nothing to write home about..
4. Social life is ok. We have all of the D9 except the Alphas. People mainly party at either the Soul or Club Extreme. If they have a car they can always go to either Montgomery or Auburn for civilization.
5. Academics vary depending on your major. Some professors are pushovers while others are nothing to laugh at.
If you have any questions feel to ask....

this college search is harder than i expected!! so now i might have to cross Tuskegee off my list b/c their psych/pre-med program isnt academically rigorous. i really didnt want to apply to many PWIs but the feedback ive been getting on about HBCUs are really pushing me further and further away. would u suggest any other colleges/universities to look into. They can be primarily white school but i would like them to b diverse, or any other HBCU besides the 1s i have listed that are well rounded schools..etc because i really need to come up with a final list of schools.

I didn't say that the psychology major wasn't academically demanding. I just pointed out the possibility that your coursework wouldn't prepare you for the MCAT. I was meaning to ask...how is a psychology major exactly supposed to do that? I'm curious. I know that you can't major in things like pre-law or pre-med.. universities just put you in classes that would be beneficial, more like a concentration or minor.
