Accepted To Fisk Univ! What should I Expect? Posted on 03-02-2004
In Rod We Trust

I was accepted to my dream school, Fisk University about two weeks ago. I am very excited because I worked very hard to get my a** in this school. Now I need help from my fellow Fiskites to let me know what I should expect from Fisk my freshmen year and the years to come. 8) P.S. I need all the information that anyone can give me, so if you are a student of Fisk, don't be afraid to let me anything, because I am one of you all now. Spread Love 8)

If you follow this board, you'll notice that Morehouse and Spelman students have posted a "letter to prospectives" outlining what to expect. Before we go into final exams, I was wondering if you guys wanted me to share some of that kind of information about FISK? Holla back...

Orientation Orientation Week will be one of the best times your freshman year. You meet your orientation leaders, register for classes, learn the campus and its history and you learn the alma mater. We make a big deal of learning the history because we believe it is one of our greatest strengths. Every night you have a family meeting to discuss issues related to your success at FISK. Then, you break up into separate groups with your individual orientation leaders. That’s when you learn the alma mater, group dance/step, and have fun. Ladies, bring your conservative white dress, skin-tone stockings, pearls, and black closed shoes for opening convocation which is the time freshmen are “presented” to the whole campus. Guys, bring your dark (navy or black) suits. The last two years, the guys have looked really good while everyone commented on how the ladies needed to be more classy. If you don’t meet the standard, you might be stopped from participating…Orientation week is also when you get used to curfew. Curfew is at midnight and is enforced but it’s really no big deal-you’ll see. People usually hang out until 11:59:59 Dorms Girls live in historic Jubilee Hall. Since Jubilee Hall is one of the main buildings on our campus tours, you always should look your best when you come downstairs. Scarves, pj’s, and slippers should be left in your room because you never know when important people are in the lobby. You can’t have boys in your room but they can come into the lobby or parlor areas. You will share a room with one other girl and there are community bathrooms on each hall. The fourth floor has the smallest rooms. Jubilee is air-conditioned and cable is provided in the lounge areas (on each floor) but not in the room. Guys live in New Livingstone, which is pretty much the same arrangement as Jubilee but houses freshmen and sophomore guys. Freshman guys have the same curfew/visitation policy as girls, but its more relaxed because sophomore guys have keys so if you make friends you can get in after hours. I wouldn’t push it, though, because if you get caught there is a $50 dollar fine. Girls should be very careful about being seen in New Liv (and how they behave with boys in general) because your reputation can be ruined in an instant and once ruined it’s never repaired (meaning no elected office, no sorority, no Miss FISK, etc.). Rivalry There is a lot made of the supposed rivalry between FISK and TSU but it really is only kept alive by a few idiots on both campuses. Most students at FISK are about the business of being the best they can be and don’t spend a lot of time worrying about other campuses. There is a lot of socializing between the students, so don’t believe the hype. If it’s around the clock fun you’re looking for, TSU can probably provide it. We have beat TSU in basketball for the last two years and that game is very popular. Locals throw all their support behind TSU but whatever… Clubs/Social Life OK, I’ma be real on this one…Nashville ain’t NYC, DC, or even Atlanta. There are a few clubs mostly downtown and you can go at 18 but you can’t drink until 21. You have to find your own transportation and they change names it seems like every week. However, there are always house sets and private parties. There are parties at TSU and Vanderbilt as well. We have VERY FEW parties on campus but that’s okay because many students at FISK aren’t heavy party’ers anyway. If you have a car, you should definitely bring it your sophomore year. There are malls, movies, restaurants, Titans football, and the ever-popular road trip to take advantage of. Nashville also gets a lot of concerts, theatre, and that kind of stuff. Homecoming Next to Orientation Week, Homecoming is probably one of the most enjoyable times of the school year. The fashion show, Coronation of Miss FISK, After-Coronation Ball are the highlights. Also, the greeks have their probate shows around this time as well…Curfew is extended so that freshman can enjoy off-campus events too. The coronation is really beautiful and it’s the one time you can see just how attractive your fellow FISKites are. People that you’ve sat next to in class will all of a sudden be like “whoa”…Bring a nice dress for the After-Coronation Ball. This past year, some people skipped Coronation because they were getting ready for the Ball. Guys should look really classy (tuxedos and stuff) because the few who came dressed like pimps and ballers last year looked really crazy!!!!!!!! Guys/Girls Most people at FISK are just mad cool. Of course we have our ghetto children and our “soFISKticates”, but most students are really easy to get along with once you get to know them. A lot of students were “the quiet ones” in their high school and that carries over here. We have our really pretty girls and good-looking guys, although some would say not enough good-looking guys. Locals/TSU men/Vandy men/MTSU men are ALWAYS checking for FISK women, so watch out-before you start speaking ask your sisters at FISK what the deal is. On campus, we have a dress code but most students are not overly concerned with fashion. Although come the first warm days of spring you will see heels and hair done. The fellas are kinda slack, except the Kappas, Alphas, and the brothers who have jobs off-campus. The girls and guys basketball teams are cliques of their own. There are a few guys at FISK who haven’t come out of high school mode, but that’s probably true of every college. There are a few girls who express little or no interest in refinement or culture. IN OTHER WORDS, typical college campus…One more thing, we are a small campus so discretion is key not just with regard to greek stuff but your personal business as well. Academics Academics at FISK are challenging but slippery. A lot of folks get fooled because freshman year is kinda easy…what they don’t realize is that those freshman “A”’s help a lot once you start getting your **** kicked in your major. Students hate the Core (general education) classes, but take my advice and get the “A”’s while you can. If you are in the early entrance program to Meharry your **** will be kicked all three years and a lot of students are starting to cross-register for courses at Vanderbilt since we can. Even though we are a small school, things will not be handed to you. This is another place that having a positive reputation and relationship with faculty and staff can come in handy. When they get information about scholarships, internships, GMAT/LSAT/GRE prep CD’s, etc. they will let you know about it if they like you. You may hear some students say that they want more challenge, but it’s funny those students names don’t appear on the Provost List (honor roll)…Be serious about your books. If you are, feel confident that you can hold your own with ANYONE from ANYWHERE! Upperclassmen Upperclassmen generally come in two categories: bitter and helpful. The helpful upperclassmen are the ones that will embrace you during Orientation Week, the ones who are smiling and friendly, the ones who are involved on campus. The bitter ones are the ones who are ALWAYS complaining (but still around), say negative things WHENEVER they get the chance, and don’t participate in school events. The bitter ones failed to learn the lesson that FISK is not supposed to be perfect, but to teach you how to handle your business if nothing else. Lord knows there are some trying days here J but I digress…The upperclassmen also don’t tend to dress because at this point most of them either don’t care or are from the era when people didn’t focus on that (example: the graduating AKAs). Some of them you will truly remember as having made your freshman year, others you won’t know existed until they come back for homecoming. As with any college campus, some upperclassmen are always looking for fresh meat (that applies to both male and female)-don’t let a junior or senior turn you out and cause you to lose focus. Also, if a guy approaches you be nice but remember there’s a chance he will be tryin’ to holla at several females as the ratio is 7:1 on campus.

Miscellaneous · If you plan on being a member of the world-renowned Jubilee Singers: Read “Dark Midnight When I Rise” by Andrew J. Ward prepare to audition with a classical piece and a spiritual · Take time this summer to read “The Souls of Black Folk” by WEB DuBois · Remember to get involved but to find the balance between involvement and grades; most non-greek organizations require you to maintain a 2.5 for active membership; greeks require a minimum cumulative 3.0 · Alphas, Kappas, and Deltas will be off the yard for at least your freshman year; in fact many of the Deltas and Alphas will be graduating this year · Bring an open, eager, and honest mind and be prepared to speak when spoken to (on-campus) This is all I can think of for now, but if you have any questions leave them on this post and I will respond!

Wow....thanks for all of the info! Questions: Is Jubilee Hall wired for Cable in the dorm rooms, if not, why? Can we have cars our freshman years? Has the administration ever thought about getting another contractor for the cafeteria? The food is not good!

1) No, the rooms are not wired for cable. Only the freshmen seemed to be hyped up about cable in the room. Most upperclassmen are involved or out in the city. Plus, its not an administration priority. 2) Yes, you can have a car your freshman year but its best NOT to bring it until at least second semester. Get used to FISK and Nashville first; plus have some decent grades to show your parents; car maintenance can be expensive... 3) LOL, I dunno about the cafeteria thing; are you a student or was the food bad on one of your visits? One thing I can say, though, EVERYONE at college (no matter what school) complains about the food :-)

Yes, Inside Fisk is giving us very useful tips. But we also have to understand that what he/she says really doesn't compare to what we're actualy going to experince and feel once we set foot on that campus. I know that everyone is exicted just like I am about attending FISK in the fall and I can't wait to actually meet my soon to be Fiskite brothers and sisters. :o
