Accepted To Fisk Univ! What should I Expect? Posted on 03-02-2004
In Rod We Trust

I was accepted to my dream school, Fisk University about two weeks ago. I am very excited because I worked very hard to get my a** in this school. Now I need help from my fellow Fiskites to let me know what I should expect from Fisk my freshmen year and the years to come. 8) P.S. I need all the information that anyone can give me, so if you are a student of Fisk, don't be afraid to let me anything, because I am one of you all now. Spread Love 8)

But we also have to understand that what he/she says really doesn't compare to what we're actualy going to experince and feel once we set foot on that campus. THIS WE KNOW....BUT THE INFO STILL IS HELPFUL...SEE YA IN THE FALL

No matter which BCU that you choose Fisk, TSU, or any other. Just remember why you are there. Many freshman will enter school this fall, but many will not last a semester. So above all, choose your friends wisely, and never loose sight of your goals. However, I am am partial to TSU, because I graduated from there. Before I attended college I leaned towards Fisk over TSU initally, mostly because of it's reputation for being sort of sophisticated. But upon visiting Nahville, TSU became my choice. It basically came down to which school fit my personality. It's true often when I visited friends on FIsk campus, Fiskites stare. I also had a friend that attended there and he became very stuck up. But people call TSU the party school, so every campus will have a reputation. What I can say is you will enjoy your time at an HBCU. Best luck to the soon to be Freshies!

Okay, this is what I want to know. I will be coming there in the Fall, and I will be needing to keep my hair my up. Are there braiding shops/ Hair Salons in the area and what about Public transportation. When I came to visit I didn't see any bus stops. What is the crime rate on campus and in the area and what do my students do there in their lesiure?

HAIR: There are beauty shops all along Jefferson Street, the main street that runs through North Nashville (where FISK is). You can choose one of them OR the cheaper alternative is to find a student who does hair (there are a few). Once you get to campus and see someone who's hair you like, simply ask who does it... TRANSPO: Nashville only has bus lines as public transportation. If you use the bus, make sure you have plenty of time because you will most likely have to transfer buses downtown to complete your trip. FISKites typically ask someone for a ride or have friends with cars. Don't worry if this seems daunting as a freshman, you will see how quickly you can find rides....even to Wal-Mart at midnight, LOL! BTW, cabs are HELLA EXPENSIVE! Plus people laugh when you pull up to the club in a cab, this ain't NYC... LEISURE: When people say college is what you make it, THIS is really what they're talking about. Many FISKites spend leisure time studying (REALLY), but also spend time at the movies, the mall, visiting friends at TSU or Vandy. Many freshman feel that some of their best moments were actually the simplest ones-getting to know people on campus. Freshman also seem to like Music On The Yard (sponsored by SGA, I think), Freestyle Fridays and other on campus events. There are also plenty of organizations-geographic clubs, Jubilee Singers, Modern Black Mass Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Tanner Art Club, NAACP, SGA to get involved in as well. Keep in mind your curfew is midnight, but by all means try to get involved. Don't just limit yourself to the college campuses, get out into the city. Nashville has some decent restaurants, parks, etc. I will say that if you're looking for that fast-paced urban atmosphere-you will need some time to get adjusted, LOL! Also, FISK and "crunk" never go in the same sentence :-)... CRIME: I don't have any actual crime statistics, but the Chief of Police for the city was on our campus about a year ago applauding the fact that we have one of the lowest campus crime rates of the schools in the Middle Tennessee area (want crime? check out MTSU). I think that's great considering our location. If you are female, it is easy to get a guy to walk you back to your dorm at night. Also, don't walk Jefferson Street by yourself. Always get a friend or two or take a car. That doesn't mean FISK is paradise, car radios do get stolen. If you are bring a car or other valuables that can't be easily replaced INSURE THEM. Don't set yourself up, because IT WON'T BE THE UNIVERSITY'S FAULT. Believe that...

Congrats on going to Fisk. I loved my experiences. Please ignore the ignorance from those idiots above who were belittling Fisk. As you can see, they said nothing about academics when it comes to Fisk. True TSU does have new facilities yet those facilites are due to them being a STATE school and the fact that those same facilites are used to attract WHITE students who go there for free while those same idiots on this board had to take out loans and pell grants, etc. Case Closed.

When will the HATING on TSU stop?....TSU is a beautiful campus period. As far as attracting white sudents: TSU is still 85% African American. Out of 9700 students, that is a pretty large amount. Most of the white folks are NON-TRADITIONAL students, so they dont count So Fisk Lady, I beg to differ on academics. Private does not always mean better. You are jsut paying for FISK's HISTORY....Nothing stands out about your degree compared to mine. We are all in the same boat. THOSE WHITE FOLSK DONT CARE WHAT SCHOOL YOU WENT TO. ALL THEY SEE IS COLOR. Until Fisk understands thay are in no way, shape or form superior to TSU, then we will always have this little problem. As far as loans and pell grants at TSU: The same number of students on financial aid at TSU is 64% compared to 73% at Fisk..... Lets do our research before we blirt out truthless/ pointless statements. No one is hating on Fisk; ya'll just take you- selves way toooooo serious. Both schools represent the struggle; we are still connected in more ways than one.... P.S.---If you truly want to discuss this, you will hit me up on the email jjones614@yahoo..... PEACE-

Have you seen that school, I hope so cause when I went I did not find it to be somewhere where I can not only be educated but enjoy myself. It seems good academically but that is all it is, but dats u just a fair warning go see it b4 u make ANY major life decisions.
