HOW DID U END UP AT YOUR CURRENT SCHOOL? Posted on 05-26-2004

QUESTION. HOW DID U END UP AT UR CURRENT SCHOOL... DID U ALWAYS WANT TO GO THERE OR WAS IT BY CIRCUMSTANCES... ME BEFORE LAST JANUARY... I NEVER EVER CONSIDERED AN HBCU... AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED. I WAS GOING TO BE A UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI FOOTBALL PLAYER AND GO TO SCHOOL THERE. EITHER THERE OR POTENTIALLY CLEMSON. I HAD COMMITTED TO USM BEFORE THAT. WELL SH!T FELL APART AND THE COACH WHO RECRUITED ME GOT FIRED... IT WAS EITHER DELTA STATE.. A FEW POTENTIAL MORE SMALL PWC'S OR A JUNIOR COLLEGE... WELL A FEW WEEKS LATER JACKSON STATE CALLED AND OFFERED ME A FULL SCHOLARSHIP.... MY DAD WENT TO JACKSON STATE SO I LOOKED INTO EM.. TOOK A RECRUIT TRIP AND IT WAS OK. MISSISSIPPI STATE CALLED LIKE A WEEK BEFORE SIGNING DAY WAS LIKE WHY DON'T YOU WAIT ONE WEEK AFTER SIGNING DAY AND IF WE DO NOT SIGN THIS OTHER PLAYER, WE ARE GOING TO SIGN YOU. I WAS LIKE THAT IS TOO RISKY.. BECAUSE IF I WAIT AND THEY DON;T SIGN ME.. I AM STUCK LIKE CHUCK.... SO I WENT AHEAD AND SIGNED WITH JSU... (I STILL WISH I WAS AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISS)... I LIKE DIVERSITY..

How did I get to Hampton...um this little thing that you call applying. sike naw...besides that I wanted to be a psychology major at first. I also wanted to go to Spelman. My godsisters went to Hampton so I practically had been down there a bigillion times...I wanted something different. But as I learned more about psychology I found out its to broad of a field...and you have to do too much to get paid. Plus everybody and they momma is a psych major. Well lawd and behold I went to High School Day at Hampton...decided to go to the academic fair to talk to the Psych professors...and guess what? Nobody was there. My department chair (communicative sciences and disorders) was sitting a couple tables over and called me over. He gave me some info... I researched the field and Hampton...found out that HIU was the first HBCU to have the major and one of 8 HBCU's to currently have the major. I wasn't interested in the other 8 so I went to Hampton.

i was at the point where i ain't no where to go... i wanted to go to Drexel in Philly to be close to my Philly fam, or the University of Kansas, easier for me to go back to home..... but i knew my parents were gonna be in Charlotte, so i applied to a few schools and also a few schools to see if i get in... I got accepted to FAMU and i was primed and ready to go there... then UNC offered me a scholarship...but i was still waiting on A&T... FAMU was off the chain, but A&T just had that magic and history to me... made me want to learn a lil more about it... the bullet holes in Scott during the Civil Rights Movement, the G-boro Four who launched the sit-in movement in downtown Greensboro... i turned down that scholarshiip to UNC, and i got my acceptance letter to T... wouldn't trade it for anything... 8)

I feel ya...I turned down some money. I went to this college fair that let you talk to people and they offered you money after looking at your portfolio. I had a full ride to Washington and Lee, Ball State (partial), Howard (partial), and George Washington (partial). I went to Hampton with them only giving me $4000...just something about the atmosphere made me feel like that was the place for me.

hmmmm, how the hell did I end up at Paine? Like some of yall said. I was going to go to a PWI. I was thinking bout U Tenn, Clemson, or Auburn. I really wanted to go to Tenn. Then the next year I realized I wanted to go to a HBCU cuz of band and the surroundings so I knew I was going to Morris Brown. THEN, Mo B got in trouble and I refused to go to Clark (their rivals). During my senior year I was picking all kinda schools: Tuskegee, Morgan, Howard, NCAT, FAM, Bethune, etc.... I didn't have my head on straight. Then senior year a lot of coaches from GA wanted me so I was choosing between Fort Valley and Albany. I chose Fort Valley, track coach was a b!tch, chose Paine.

I actually didn't apply to North Carolina A&T until July of the year that I got here. I was originally going to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I already had my room, my phone number, my mailing address, I had a letter from my peer advisor, my roomate, wrote me a letter, and I was in the student directory. I went out of the country for the summer and my parents had an application waiting for me when I returned. The next day it was handed to the chancellor and signed. A week later I had a full ride. Since UNC was giving me no money at all, my decision was made for me, and I ended up transferring before I ever took a class...
