Sooo...I've noticed a growing and DISTURBING(at least for me) trend at my school....More and more whites, asians and other non blacks are signing up for HBCUs...Well...to put it mildly...it shocked the sh!t outta me and personally I DETEST the idea of whites at an HBCU...I just think it defeats the whole purpose....
My friends think I'm rascist...AND maybe I am.... but anyways how do ya'll feel about asians and whites invading HBCUs?
For those who are at an hbcu now, are you startin to see a more diverse campus? Does it bother you?
Is it rascist to want HBCUs to remain black?
How you feel about HBCUs is how alot of whites feel about PWCs.
You also have to realize that HBCUs are HISTORICALLY black but not PRESENTLY black, meaning anyone can attend and some schools have to diversify for funding purposes. And to my knowledge I dont think there is or ever was an HBCU that didnt allow whites or other races.
I only remember two white kids who went to Howard; this Brady Bunch lookin white girl and this wannabe Black white dude. They both seemed pretty cool, though...
If white folks or asians or whatever choose to come to Howard, then great! Take it as a compliment.
I feel the same way but we cant stop them i too strongly detest this movement but there must be something the HBCU's have that other colleges dont. One thing that will set me off is if and when asians WHITES and others try to "Act" black. I rather a caucasion person (sp) be white as all he!! than one of them tryna come up to me givin me a dap with that extra pat on da back and then whippin out the n word like its okay.
No i dont believe that it is racist to want hbcus to remain black im right along with you on that and most people have a slight bit of racism in them including myself for sure but it most definitely is not blatant and far from hateful so its whatever its how I personally feel.
Maybe it's because I'm a bit more open minded and maybe it's because I don't attend an HBCU...but when I did, I actually didn't mind seeing the white kids or the asians. It reminded me that there were other races in the world, lol. But no really...I think that HBCUs should continue to stress the importance of them, but also open up the doors to students of other races...they have a unique history, why not let others study there? There are some programs that HBCUs offer that are unique (or top in their field) so why should others be denied from going there simply because of the color of their skin? I don't think thats fair...but I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion...*shrugs*
I've been going to predominantly white schools since I can remember, and I just want a change of scenery at an HBCU. A little salt mixed in here or there wouldn't be such a bad thing though. As long as they don't come rolling through campus trying to act like the world is theirs to conquer, I'm cool with them.
Oh yeah...one BIG pet peeve of mine and I wish people would stop saying that someone acts "black"...you cannot act a color...you can however be so into a culture that you emulate it...yeah its annoying, but supposedly its the biggest form of flattery...I don't wish people would act their "color"...I just wish people would be authentic and be themselves...I know white ppl and hispanics who grew up in hood, so if that is all they know, why would you expect them to act otherwise? Just saying...something to think about and consider

I see nothing wrong with it. You can't get mad at other races and nationalities noticing the value of HBCUs when we don't. Like Truth said, we're HISTORICALLY black, meaning the schools were created during a time when blacks couldn't attend PWIs. Places where we were, and continue to be, taught on the same level. I think that once you take orientation during your first year and learn the history of your school, you'll change your thoughts about this.
...and I thought this was a topic about Oreo cookies! lol I like them Golden Oreos!

That's true Classy Girl. I myself was pretty much raised in Overtown, Miami, Florida. For those who don't know, it is a predominately Black area. I am Spanish but you can't tell because I don't carry an accent when I speak, in fact I sometimes don't look Spanish. I can speak real slang if I want, but I can also turn it off. I lived my culture inside my home, but when I went outside, to school, store, or whatever the Black dialect of speaking, or slang, is all I heard.
There is nothing wrong with whites enrolling in an HBCU. It is a compliment! Out of all the schools they had to choose from they chose an HBCU. I believe there are more PWIs then HBCUs, so obviously they saw something they liked.
