Would it worK in this day in age? Posted on 10-12-2004
ReDD HarLeM DeViLL

I was just thinKing about something and wondering would it worK or still be remotely the same as it was when it began. In the song, dude asKs "Why did Malcolm's mission die with the man?" Which was a very interesting question... and that's when I was liKe what if in 2004 it was still going strong? And people were more conscious and actually paid attention to the little things. Then I was thinKing... What if the BlacK Panthers were still going strong? How would that go being that we have so many youth that don't understand what it is to be apart of something so serious? But how do you thinK things would be?

First of all if Malcolm's mission was still well in tact and going strong I don't think we'd have as many black faces locked behind penitentiary walls and we wouldn't have as many children running around here imitating video hoes. Then again, it makes me wonder would we even have video hoes? Probably not. I think we would've been better off right now than we are actually are. I don't think we would've been as militant as most people probably would think, because as Malcolm was beginning to see things from different perspectives before he died. If his mission would have progressed along with Martin's mission, I believe eventually they would have begun to coincide with each other. This would have led to a black race of such greatness that most, today, wouldn't even be able to comprehend. Now if the Black Panthers were still running things today, I don't know where we would be. There's a possibility that we could've been better off. Then again, there's a possibility that we could've fought the second civil war. That's just too close to call, because you had the leaders in the mission who were true to the cause and then you had those who had alterior motives. This one I just don't know.

Yeah that was my thoughts too, But in todays world had things taKen that turn for the better for us as a people.... maybe it's just me dreaming ... but I feel we'd be a dominant force. I mean, we still can do this now... but it's gonna be a process.

Malcolm's mission died with Malcolm because people were afraid of getting merked, first of all. Then, in the 80's, nobody wanted to be "too radical" because it would upset their upward mobility. Had his mission still been strong now, Black America would be more  wealthy, moral, spiritual, ethical  More focused on education, not degree-grabbing  more knowledgeable about their history and how we should go about shaping our future with elements form our community's past and present  I wouldn't have to f*ck wit' Tre's broke @ss no mo'

i agree with what everyone has said.... also, Malcolm was a big advocate of nationalism....Blacks doing for self, instead of relying on the "other man" so heavily....as we've done from day one...& still do, very much so... i remember my mom telling me once something my cousin said a long time ago...he was like, if there were ever a race war in America, we'd (the Black community) be outta luck... now, why is that? because think about it....when we're sick or have been severly injured in battle, where are we going to have to run to? the White hospitals... when it comes time to eat, where are we going to be able to go? the White grocery stores......& the White restaurants.... need more funding for our businesses and educational institution, who do we turn to? the White "powers that be".... i agree whole-heartedly with what my cousin said....Malcolm just wanted us as a race collectively and individually to do so much for our own selves to where, if need be, we could survive on our own....and even with it being 2004, I don't think that is a possibility right now....certainly wasn't at that time.... so maybe if he had been around this whole time, if we weren't already completely self-sufficient by now...we'd be a LOT closer than we actually are.... but i don't know....all ya can do is dream, i guess....

For a picture of what the Black Panthers would look like in the 2000's, I would probably say the modern Nation of Islam would give you a good idea. Both encourage discipline and moral responsibility, and promote an Afro-centric platform centered around Black unity and indepence. Politically, both groups have socialist views. In fact, the Black Panthers' Manifesto was based upon the original Muslim Program of NOI which called for establishing an independent Black state. The Panthers had entrepreneurial programs to provide for its members and community, such as offering free food and health care to the needy. NOI has similar ventures For example, the NOI has its own 1600 acre working farm in Georgia (about 4 times the size of A&T's campus). Similar principles and structure... so I think it's a good reference point. Holla!

I would love to be apart of something that major, something that serious. And I really would love for something liKe that to be brought forth to this day. It would really help to structure us as a people, and give many of us a touch more of hope depending on one's stand point and situation. On another note tho, I would so rather tell someone that I am a Panther than to tell them I am with the Army or the service or whatever. Don't get me wrong, I respect those that made that choice, but to me standing for a cause just says alot more.
